A lot of the "this feels like the Internet 20 years ago" is based on the still very niche, very exclusive character of this platform. That's not a complaint, it's good that Mastodon has this phase of playful exploration without having to carry the load of public discourse in any meaningful way.

But one should be aware of it when writing hagiographically about this magical place.

@tante Ich denke auch, dass Medien sich generell in ihren Lebenszyklen beschleunigt haben und die 90er des Internet hier sicher nicht Jahre dauern werden.

@leitmedium Hängt davon ab, ob das Wachstum weitergeht und was mit Twitter wird. Aber ja. Wird wahrscheinlich eher schneller vorbei sein (oder man versinkt wieder völlig in der Nische)

@tante @leitmedium Es wird weder wie das Internet früher noch wie Twitter. So viel Glaskugel wage ich. 😄
Aber es gibt viele Orte im Internet an denen man die ganze Zeit besser mit einander umgegangen ist als bei Twitter.
Ich glaube, wenn Leute im #Fediverse Geld finden, wird das noch einmal etwas ändern. Also wenn Leute kompatible Dienste entwickeln, die dann doch kommerzialisiert werden. Oder wenn ein YouTube-Account plötzlich auch ein Fediverse-Account wird...

@tante and it's telling when people say they've been missing that kind of internet, that their problem is with the rest of the world being there.

It's the same with "We've been here longer so we set the social norms, if you don't follow them you're out." What do people think "etiquette" at tables was meant to signal?

@tante ich gehe davon aus, dass sich die einzelnen Mastodon-Clients und -Metaversen mit der Zeit auseinanderentwickeln werden. Es wird die Klickibunti-Instanzen geben ebenso wie die übertechnisierten Ich-möchte-alles-selbst-einstellen-Instanzen. Wer Mastodon puristisch mag, wird das auch noch in zehn oder zwanzig Jahren so praktizieren können.

@tante We could use more of "the internet 20 years ago". Remember when you could use one client to talk to a dozen different IM networks? Today's kids don't even know how much we've lost.

@tante New site migrations often show a honeymoon phase. I recall a few 'What hath God wrought' conversations on Flickr and G+. In this phase users easily and unironically say 'ours' of a place.

The illusion is one actual owners like to encourage. It falls hard, as we know.

With luck, though, we may be moving toward a model where the people who supply content also determine direction.
