Big or small, there is no such thing as a silly question.
@host Does the server admin decide on which servers appear in the Federated tab, or do they give priority? What's the deal with it

@Pathos very good one.

People that have admin acces (which is me and a couple of people really) can do the following on the FTL:
* Remove full instance
* Remove single user
* Let people on your home TL but limit them on the FTL

How does it get on the FTL:
* You follow someone & they tooted a public post
* A person on tabletop.social follow that someone.
* A person boosted that someone into your TL or anyone on TTS.

We cannot change priority, or stuff like that

@host @Pathos Is it possible for the admin to pull whole instances into the federated timeline? e.g. dice.camp is another tabletop-focused one that might be a good fit.

@JonSimantov @Pathos if everyone on dice.camp is followed by someone on tabletop.social, all their public post will be on our federated TL.

Unlike us, dice.camp don't have the concept of a local only toot, so their local TL is just all of their public toots if that makes sense.

TL;DR: no as an admin, but as a group yes, sort of.

Note: I do encourage everyone to create more than one account, even just as a back up

@host is there an official app on iPhone? I noticed people recommending different apps to use (some of them cost money), and I don’t want to accidentally fall for a scam.

@HenriWhitehead I dont know much about iphone.
Tusky is the best for android.

Let me do a poll and see what people say

@HenriWhitehead @host MetaText is the most frequently recommended free iPhone app, from all the conversations I’ve seen.
@host @HenriWhitehead I’ve seen a few folks recommend Metatext for iOS. I just installed it tonight and already I’m enjoying the experience so much better than the web interface or the “official” app. It also supports multiple accounts in case you’re on more than one instance.

@HenriWhitehead @host

I chose to try Toot! after reading this comparison piece:

https://eldritch.cafe/@transponderings/108339369437990706

So far, I'm happy with it. Metatext did seem to be the other one that looked good. None of them are as well tuned to this platform as the native Twitter app though. They all seem to have their quirks and gaps. But the official Mastodon app seems particularly lightweight.

@rf_seattle @HenriWhitehead just a heads up that it seems Toot! might not work with the next version of mastodon (version 4) ?

maybe worth confirming, before spending money.

As a note, this is news to me as of today. And since I don't have iDevices, I cannot confirm this myself

@host Just to be certain, this instance also follows the rules from the weirder.earth instance?

I guess I'm asking specifically in reference to this FOSTA/SESTA section:
https://github.com/dzuk-mutant/weirder-rules/blob/master/rules-and-etiquette.md#fostasesta

@XoeAllred good question.

I'm not sure FOSTA/SESTA apply to us, we are not in the us.

Would this be the best place to advertise one services, probably not, but I could probably find you suitable instance for that.

Fundamentally sex work is work, no problem there.

TL;DR: If people send you DM about it here its cool, if you post nudes on the local and federated TL, I will likely get reports.

Is that helpful?

@host Yes I had no plans to offer or solicit any such services but I just wanted to verify the server's stance before I start asking about good people to follow for sex worker advocacy. Thank you very much!

Not exactly planning it but more curious, would accurately flagged CW nudes still be a problem?

@XoeAllred I guess CW + Unlisted post + images marked as NSFW would be ok yes.
@host Is there an iOS app which allows me to add people I follow to Lists? I’m not seeing it in the native Mastodon app, but I can do it via a browser.
@HaoleBoyGames I'm not well versed in apple stuff, a few names have surfaced like metatext and toot!, maybe give these a go ?
@host @HaoleBoyGames I just looked for “add to list” and other list management options on Toot! and Metatext and both had them!
@host @AllTheAmpersands Checking out Metatext, and there it is. Thank you!
@host Is the only reason that someone might not come up when I search for them that their instance is blocked, or could there be something else going on? Specifically wondering about fosstodon but I've noticed it's inconsistently happening with people from other instances, but that might just be down to the heavy load lately

@genevieve the main admin kev was being racist with little back with little introspection.
Also the fossbro are usuly pretty quick to mansplain and be generally in people's mention for no value.

I know some have lifted the block, but we didn't look into it as of late.

@host @genevieve Would it be possible to fill in the reasons for some of the blocked servers on the blocked server list? I’ve seen other instances enter a reason for each one, which is helpful in judging whether being behind this particular extensive block list is right for me.

@JoeSondow I kind of could, but it is a lot of work and some dedicated edgelords would take offense and probably find ways to waste my time/retaliate.

There is 5 categories:
* Pedos: Usually its in the name
* Nazis+neo fascists: the gab, truthsocial, noagenda social, etc.
* Edgelords: federate with everyone, kind of nazi light, some have gore stuff too.
* Unmoderated space: A vector for all of the above to have a field day.
* Scammers

@genevieve

@JoeSondow

I'd say 10-15 % is pedo, 10-15% is nazi, 20-40% is unmoderated space, 2-5% are scammers, the rest is the edgelords.

I'd say, it is not pretty, but having a look at the instances that are not in the pedo section would give you a good training to spot new one coming up

@genevieve

@host @genevieve Yes, I’m less concerned about the reasons for the obviously self-labeled evil servers, and more about the neutral benign sounding ones that my Twitter friends keep joining because they don’t know the history of each server and people keep incorrectly saying it doesn’t matter which server you start in.

@JoeSondow since it is hard to point people in the right direction, maybe the the answer is to tell people to join any 3 instances and then you help them stay on the least worse.

or at maybe they'll have no fear moving after opening 3 accounts.

@host In most cases it’s a casual non-tabletop acquaintance who isn’t likely to try other instances just because tabletop social blocks their generic sounding instance for reasons unknown.
@host I didn't understand & joined 3 instances. Maybe I'll keep it that way. Is there any client that displaces more than 1 instance at once? Kind of like tweetdeck?

@ginevra having 3 accounts is a good thing.

Look for tusky on android and metatext or toot! on iphones, they do multi account

@host can we learn a bit more about you? Just curious how you got into this.

So far it’s been nice to see people chatting games.

@DungeonMasterDoc beside being 3 elephant in a trenchcoat you mean?

I guess I didnt find a place I belonged nor did I find a place that I felt was providing the right level of moderation I was comfortable with.

Generally speaking tho, I am not one to talk abouy myself.
I'm happy to make sure things are working and that trolls at kept at bay so that the community can enjoy the space.

@host How do I read a thread?
I see a post, and I want to reply to the post, but I'd like to see the thread so I don't duplicate what others have said. I'm on the web. I've been clicking on the time in the bottom left corner, but that seems to take me to the mobile version of Mastodon. Is there an easier way to expand a thread and then reply? How about to review the thread in the timeline once someone has replied to me?

@scottnicholson hum, if you see a toot, and click on it (not on any link on the toot like the date or anything, just click void spare or the text in the body of the toot).

Then it should apear in the third column with a "Toots and replies" header.

The toot you clicked will be there and slightly more light grey than the other toot as part of the thread.

Does that make sense? would it help with a few screenshot?

@host Yup, I got it to work!

I didn't think of "click on a blank area." I was looking for something to click on.

But instead, I just needed to clear my mind, take a deep breath, and embrace the nothingness of the toot.

Thank you!

@scottnicholson sometime we just need to embrace the void :)
@host if we do make another account on a different instance as you recommend, are there any tools for keeping them synced?

@koboldstyle my advise would be to not keep them in sync.

Use them for different thing or for different days of the week, or only keep one active (and clearly sign post that in the bio and display name).

There are probably apps or service to actually keep 2 accounts posting the same thing, but from the other ends it is annoying because I see 2 of your posts all the time, I will end up unfollowing one and it will defeat the purpose

@host are the rules posted in the discord server the full list of rules for this community? I wanted to reference back to the rules, but I wasn't sure where to find them

@JunkFoodGames https://tabletop.social/about/more should be the place to look for them.

the discord is only there in case something happens here and we need to about it: there is an impromptu maintenance going on or something

@host Got a second question! I'm trying to follow someone on another instance (infosec.exchange), and when I attempt to follow I'm redirected back to here with the error: "Unfortunately, there was an error looking up the remote account".

Any ideas?

@host under the CW etiquette instructions here https://github.com/dzuk-mutant/weirder-rules/blob/master/rules-and-etiquette.md this is on the list of post types that should have a cw:

Long posts or posts with multiple parts (please also use the 'unlisted' privacy setting for posts after the first in a thread, so that the local timeline doesn't get flooded)

What is the cutoff to consider something a long post? 4+ lines? Out of curiosity, why is cw appreciated w/ these?

@protospielo originally we had more than 500 characters, so toot could end up quite long.

I think if you do the full 500, maybe a CW "Long" + what ever it is about would be appreciated.

And yes we encourage people to do thread where the first post is "public", while the rest is unlisted, so every post is not in the local of public TL.

People that want to see the thread will see it, but there won't be a massive amount of toot that people have no context

@host I got a 404 when I clicked the profile directory link here. Is this something I’m supposed to have access to/is this link supposed to be here?
@protospielo @host Confirmed. I see that logged in as well using Metatext on iOS.

@HaoleBoyGames @protospielo yes, we had it disabled to avoid people finding details to harass our users.

Might be something we can re-enable.
I'll check with the mod team.

It is also something we might need to talk as instance

@host @HaoleBoyGames ah, makes sense.

Odd that the link stays displayed on this page when the directory has been disabled. Assuming you can’t remove the button, do you have the ability to link it to a page with a message like “directory disabled for this instance”?

@protospielo @HaoleBoyGames disabling the directory goes against Eugen's vision, so there is no way to make it nice.

I mean it is technically possible but then we would need to change the hosting provider and manage the instance ourself to customise it like that

@host the server policy of self-promotion (Kickstarter, Patron, or even a Ko-Fi page where you take commissions) seems pretty harsh compared to other servers. Is there a reason for that?

@Mycomancer the rules are a bit more involved here than elsewhere, yes.

It is hard to put the right level of nuance in the rules.

Someone taking comission as a side hustle is not the same as a big company grossing millions a year.

Both of those are also different from an account that just post about deals / affiliate links.

The rules are a strong signal because saying "just don't spam" is not very clear.

Happy to discuss details if that helps

@host I bring it up because I'm thinking of maybe starting a Patreon and/or taking minis painting commissions, and rules as written, there'd be no point for me to bother advertising it here.

@Mycomancer I hear you.

My take is that your ko-fi/patreon in your profile.
They are in pinned toot toot people can find it, and boost it.

On the Public TL, you can showcase your work and say this is the stuff I do, commission wise, check my patreon in my bio if you are interesed

The call to action is to look at your profile, not click that link right there, so people on the local TL are not bombarded by "buy my stuff".

(1/2)

@Mycomancer
The CW is that so people get a chance to opt-in being marketed to.

There is no ad on here, so if you make one, the least you can do is just tell people.

A CW that is "My latest game is finally out" or "ways to support my work" or "self promotion" is giving people a choice.

If people clicked, they are already interested and are more likely to actually help you than random seeing you on their FTL.

I'd say try on 2 instance and see what works

(2/2)

@host Any way of knowing why a specific instance has been blocked? right now the whole ban list is blank, which makes the whole process a bit more difficult to interpret.

The instance in particular here is infosec.exchange (with a bunch of people from there wondering why they can't follow me), but it could apply in a lot of different situations.

@MildaMatildaGames the field didnt always exist, and our block list predate that field by some years.

When we had it, trolls use the info there to harass us or start rumours etc.

For the info sec one, I dont remember, but early days, most of the info sec instance were lacking in the moderation area.

We can look at it again for that instance. We'll need a couple of days to check

@host I've seen that some people use a lot of hashtags in their profile. I'm trying to figure out what benefit that has. I've done some searching, but can't see how you would search profiles for a hashtag. Is it simply stylistic, as a way to emphasize certain words in a profile, or is there a way to search profiles?

(I do understand using them in posts and having a hashtag-heavy introduction post, as the search tools index them in posts.)

@scottnicholson I don't think hashtag in profile make a difference.

Maybe there are automated tools that scan those and make directories and list based on those tags (by default I don't think we make the profile indexable)

@scottnicholson @host I only do it because it's easier for me to just go thru all of my hashtag searches one by one from my profile. apparently there's another way to save these searches but i haven't figured it out.
