“I specifically disagree with his stance on free speech, because I think that it depends on your interpretation of what free speech means. If you allow the most intolerant voices to be as loud as they want to, you’re going to shut down voices of different opinions as well. So allowing free speech by just allowing all speech is not actually leading to free speech, it just leads to a cesspit of hate.”

Great interview with the founder of Mastodon.

@Crecenteb Those that use the “free speech” argument only when it suits their views are really not interested in free speech. When you believe that bullying is a worthy tactic to get your way, you show your true colours.

@Crecenteb The way I look at it, is that when people came up with these idealised versions of freedom of speech, they were talking about being able to express views like "we should elect our head of state" without fear of government reprisal.

They weren't talking about the right to advocate genocide, or its precursors, or to deliberately spread misinformation and if they were then we shouldn't uncritically accept their ideas without modification.

@Crecenteb This is what forums were/are, in a "twitter-like" format. This means it will have the same caveat as forums, mainly admin and moderation power abuse. Let's not fall in the easy trap of "this is the best thing ever" cos it simply won't be. I'm prepared to give it time and see where it goes however.
@yohan but you can move servers without losing anything
@Crecenteb Yeah I know, like I said we will see how it goes, I have high hopes!
@Crecenteb yeah "freedom" to be selfish it's what it is
@Crecenteb there is learned work I don't have a link to I'm afraid (but aha, saw it on birdsite) that basically we are not obligated to tolerate intolerance.
