I don't understand why there isn't an alternative version of Twitter that is as easy to use. The MAGA crowd managed to do this multiple times. But something with the complexity of Mastodon, Discord, etc. won't have mass appeal.
@shahed I'm not so sure about the success the alt right has with social media. Sites that are specifically right wing are complete failures and 4chan isn't specifically made for them either, it's just where they happen to thrive
@aeonbigman @shahed also how is mastodon complicated? Make account -> start posting. Usernames work just like email addresses.
@eramseth @shahed I do think the regular mastodon app is a bit confusing, that's why I use tusky. And I'm sure most people coming in rn don't know that you can use different clients so maybe that's why
@aeonbigman @shahed a long time since I looked into it, but are there not 3rd party clients for twitter?
@aeonbigman @eramseth I'll give it a try - and this is starting to make more sense to me
@shahed A fun fact here is that truth social is/was at least partially build on the mastodon code base

Mastodon puts Trump’s social network on notice for improperly using its code

When Trump announced his social network Truth, internet users realized it was a fork of the open-source Twitter alternative Mastodon. Mastodon’s creators have said that’s not legally allowed given Truth’s terms of service.

@shahed The alt-right Twitters are all niche silos that don't have Twitter's success as a destination social media for influencers. So I don't see any success, per se, there. Certainly nothing worth emulating

You get used to Mastodon after a day or so of kicking the tires. The learning curve is a good filter to disincentivize spammers and MAGA while newcomers get used to the culture.

the federated model is superior for a lot of reasons. Topic for later.

@azizhp I will admit I'm starting to get the hang of it
