I've often said that if you care about the long term health of your industry, create your own instances.

However: remember that not everyone wants to interact with you.

To everyone who doesn't want to be quoted on media by journalists, have their posts embedded on their sites, or engage in any "cultural wars" -- remember you can block journalist instances!

This is a power that individual users have.

@atomicpoet ah dammit journa.host has been flooded and closed for new entrants. Really journos should follow @danhon’s proposal but in the meantime someone needs to stop them flooding your big instance and turning it into the bad place

@atomicpoet but public toots remain public to anyone, even without a Mastodon account. How useful is blocking journalist instances then?

@no_On It's useful for blocking journalist instances from interacting with your *instance*. Meaning they can't send you messages, natively boost your posts, or in any way engage with accounts that you host.

Certainly, if your messages are public, they can screenshot and repost on their instances. If this is a worry, you can take your instance private.

@atomicpoet Agreed. I did follow at least one person @parker as I also follow Parker's substack. But there are so few posts by most if any really. It's almost as their agent/manager created the page and they have yet to actually do anything. Gonna see what happens next....

@LoudLibrarian @atomicpoet That's what federation is. If any instance is federated (connected) with yours, you can connect with just about anyone on it. (Me: American on a French instance)

@atomicpoet I think people are still underestimating this revolution, and so does Musk! Shame I cannot buy stock, because I definitely would. I still remember seeing the google search engine in beta and thinking "Who the hell is going to use this instead of search.com"
