A new post in which I talk about this here Mastodon, how I like it already, and how a future net based on protocols can offer so many new opportunities and return the net to its founding principles and humanity. But then, I'm an optimist.

@jeffjarvis excellent article Jeff - and I’m glad you are a technoverse optimist! We certainly need more like you and less nay sayers who blame our techno bro overlords for our woes. What we need are choices - open protocols are an exciting way to make the web what you want, rather than what others want for you. Keep preachin’

@jeffjarvis the best part is that this is already how the internet actually works. It’s how email works, and the web, and all of it. Except for the software as a service (SaaS) disaster that was part of Web 2.0.

Basically the corporations tried and succeeded in creating proprietary platforms that locked you to them. Mastodon is just doing things the actual way of the internet.

@jeffjarvis Great post, Jeff. Excellent overview.
@jeffjarvis tell Pete Dominick to get in here.
@jeffjarvis It's worlds apart from the #birdsite but yes, I like what I see and you are saying
@jeffjarvis great article. You ARE the optimist, which, in times like these, we need. Bonus that it’s not foolish optimism, but optimism based on ideas and history.
@jeffjarvis feels so fresh and full of possibilities, like Twitter 2007.
@jeffjarvis thanks for that. Help for new folks is appreciated
@jeffjarvis Jeff, good to see you here so soon!
@jeffjarvis Good article – can I say I’d love a quick hit of your optimism. 30 years at Cisco in IT-land has rendered me cynical and jaded these days. I do love the idea of servers hosted and curated by media outlets and such, far more reliable than the blue check system. Unfortunately the Mastodon server architecture is a bit heavy and complex. Pleroma is a lot lighter but seems to have gone into neglect at this point. Anyway – here’s hoping your sunny outlook holds sway.

@jeffjarvis this is great!

I am going to treat your posting of it on Medium as a touch of irony. 😉

Hope for a post-Musk net — BuzzMachine

Maybe we’ll look back and see that Elon Musk did us, the civilized citizens of the net, a favor by forcing us off our cozy if centralized, corporatized,...

@jeffjarvis Gmail good? 😳 Try Fastmail (an employee owned company). Oh, and having your own domain so you can move any time you like w no address change. Gmail is good for a junk email address. Fastmail can provide as many unique ones as you need for as long as you need them. Some things are worth paying for, as those contributing to support Mastodon instances acknowledge.
@jeffjarvis Great post, Jeff. The online world might indeed thank Elon for showing us what we didn't want (corporate control of the commons)
