@WarInTheFuture welcome!
Once you have managed to sign up and get the app (or use on web, doesn’t matter), it works quite similarly to Twitter. Follow, post, reply.
There is no “quote tweet” or a good way to link to others’ posts currently.
You can link to peoples post;
Here is yours:

This guy has some helpful info about getting started here.
How do we reach the new folks coming in. A lot of them seem confused. Well, boost the heck out of this post! I will be making more videos this weekend on the app and webapp to help people out. Here is my intro to Mastodon video that seems to be making people happy. https://youtu.be/mrsiej2dpBY #newtomastodon #newuser #migration #twittermigration #help Follow me for notifications across instances on new videos when I release them! (And some art too)
Genuinely excited to find you here. You've been one of my favourite follows since 24 Feb.
Regarding tips, I am sure you have found these already, but if not:
Well-written backgrounder on the Fediverse in general: https://www.lawfareblog.com/what-earth-fediverse
Mastodon 101: https://github.com/joyeusenoelle/GuideToMastodon/
Mastodon 202: https://fedi.tips/
Searchable list of instances (large instances seem to be experiencing load issues what with all the Twitter refugees): https://mastodon.fediverse.observer/list
Hope that helps.
@WarInTheFuture you should have a look at #twittermigration it's full of explainers and tips for newcomers! such as: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@antimnguyen/109295993526380374
Also, my own 2cents: don't hesitate to use # here. They're not about trends like on twitter, but more of a tagging system that will help your posts reach the interested audience (since there is no algorithm pushing it to them automatically, as explained in the post i just linked!)
So good to see you here on mastodon. Have been an eager follower of your Ukraine analyses on the other site, uniquely insightful.
@WarInTheFuture Good to see you here. Just a single tip, since I know you like to do 🧵s.
The etiquette is not to have each post in a 🧵 hit your followers’ feeds one by one.
The trick is to make the first post public. Your 🧵 will be a series of replies to the first post, just like Twitter. Then set the replies to private before you publish them.
People will click on the first post and voila the entire 🧵 appears.
