Welcome to all the fellow Twitter flee-ers. Mastodon isn’t quite the same - and that’s a good thing. It’s run by people not companies. Favouriting a post only shows you & the author. Reblog if you want it seen more. Pick a server close to your interests but it’s not a massive “thing” cos you can see everyone and switch servers if you really want. If you post an image, use the alt text too. Enjoy ad-free botless tooting. #welcome #TwitterEscapees #twitterrefugees #birdsite #introduction
@mathcampbell I'm curious to know what would happen if whoever is hosting the .scot server decided to stop. The fediverse is not really decentralised in that sense. It is interesting an interesting idea though.
@MartinSLaird you can just switch servers. Ideally a server would give you time to switch before going dead, so you wouldn’t lose content etc I think there is stuff being planned to allow to you keep a “local copy” of the stuff. If you switch server the old ID redirects to the new. Choose a big server to ensure you’re safe. It is a problem but there are bigger ones with the bird site and that was before musk baby took over.
@mathcampbell Thanks. I'll need to find out more about switching servers. It's been a problem with Peertube which is also part of the fediverse. Of course I could host my own server for that but it's just not something I have the time or inclination to do and I imagine this stuff is far beyond what the average Twitter refugee would want to deal with.
@MartinSLaird I think that’a gonna be more of an issue there cos it’s video heavy so bandwidth will cost far more. Mastodon servers will obviously be less video intense and cheaper to run etc.
