Well, that’s that, then.

@aral how are you going about demanding GDPR data erasure?

@datn I’m trying out the service provided by Your Digital Rights:

https://yourdigitalrights.org/d/twitter.com

It creates an email similar to the one in the screenshot for your and they also apparently tell you when to follow up, etc.

@aral @datn Thanks for sharing! Small question, why is this necessary? What kind of data Twitter stores regardless of the deletion of the account? Thanks!

@varaya

Even years later, Twitter doesn’t delete your direct messages
https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/15/twitter-direct-messages/

TechCrunch is part of the Yahoo family of brands

@subramani I didn't know, thanks for the reference!

@varaya

You're welcome. On a lighter unrelated note, I was under the impression that only we(Indians) use the term "small question" in our conversations.

@subramani As a Latin American I use diminutives for everything :P So it was natural to just ask a "small question" :D
@varaya @datn Likely all of it (although it may no longer be accessible for you).
@aral @datn local laws aren't listed tho
@Felipe_B @datn I did have to select GDPR from a list of a handful of jurisdictions they support… is that what you mean?
@aral
How do they make sure you are the legitimate owner of that account after you deactivated it? Do they check whether you have control over the email address that was used to register?
@datn
@grob @datn No idea; I guess I’ll find out :)
@aral @datn Hey email... A man of taste I see.

@aral

i imagine that you know them
https://noyb.eu/en
Austrian lawyers that have being working on GDPR and denouncing in Europe. maybe this can be an strategic case... for them also.

@ona @datn Yep @noybeu are on the fediverse and they’re doing excellent work :)
@aral @datn thank you for the link, I've just sent my data deletion request.
@aral Obviously still go via the GDPR data removal route, but I found a bit of peace writing a script leveraging the API to delete all old posts. I think you can only delete 10 at a time, but a loop sorts that out

I did this back in April, so haven't got the script to hand, thought it was only a 5 liner
@paul Unfortunately, all that script does is have Twitter set deleted = true on the tweets. Deleting a tweet doesn’t actually delete the tweet.
@aral yeah, I know, it gave me a bit of peace though knowing my history wasn't visible (directly) by the public
Getting Twitter to delete it is, for sure, a GDPR thing
@aral @paul it probably worsens the metrics for advertisers OTOH EM does that quite well all by himself
@brezelradar @aral I am totally up for messing up metrics!

@paul @aral People also liked

- exporting their data ("Download an archive of your data")
- 🔒locking their accounts

@paul @aral The posts could've been just marked as deleted instead of completely removed.
@Anibyl @aral yep - hence "Obviously still go via the GDPR data removal route" :-)
@aral For anyone wanting a poorly written, smashed together python script to loop through their personal twitbag timeline and "delete" (who knows  ) all the posts, then I've found my script and put it here:
You will need a twitter developer account with write access though

Tweet-remover

THIS SCRIPT WILL REMOVE ALL YOUR TWITTER POSTS USE IT ONLY IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO!!!!

@paul @aral You could also try https://semiphemeral.com .

(Unfortunately for me, my account belongs to a group of old accounts that can't delete the early activity due to some bug at Twitter, no matter the tool I use.)

@aral I'm working on that as well. Gonna feel good when I'm off.
@babylontales @aral I said I’ll give it another month a week ago, but I can’t wait and will probably pull the plug sooner.
@BoogieMoscovitch @aral I feel that. It's only taken me this long because I don't want to accidentally mess up accounts to other sites associated with it.
@aral Dayumm!  Well done mate! You and me the same
@aral mine will stay up as a pointer to bring folks here, but I downloaded my archive earlier this week and have made plans to delete previous tweets.

@vmstan I am leaving the account there, and I d/l the archive. But I won't be deleting content bc most of it is politics and social justice.

What I will be removing are my follows after I give twitodon.com a try.

@vmstan @aral yes, that’s where I’m at now: archived, and then zapped all tweets and likes. The tool I used allowed me to do that for free, because thankfully I was under their quota of 3000. 👍

@aral Congratulations 👏

I'm still stuck because I have 1 bubble that won't budge - they might not see my invitation posts because my interaction count is too low 🙄

Got a few likes, but no signups.

@aral That's how it's done. Respect! 👏
@aral How did you get on with the data erasure request?
@tomstoneham Only just sent it, will keep y’all updated on how it goes :)
@aral @aral Principled stance 👏 I hope someone/you will register the username soon to prevent abuse of the username.

@aral : did the same one year ago (with a verified and highly followed account). Hard to do but never looked back…

@aral any tips on erasing an account? Twitter is demanding my ID before I can erase mine…
@aral Is there some kind of official way to ask for data deletion at Twitter?
@aral a brave decision, respect!
