trying to purge myself out of twitter and now doing a plex server purchase so I can delete spotify, indie web hunter is BACK this fall
sidebar if you have a recommended plex server for the home LMK
@hunterowens how much content you looking to host? Feel like it all comes down to how much storage space and redundancy you need to determine what form factor to go with. My brother has run one for years and is storing 10+ TB.
@Weshigh music collection mainly, about 100gb
@hunterowens yeah I would probably with a synology or similar as someone else mentioned unless you already have something you could piggy pack off of. I run a little microATX SuperMicro board with Proxmox on it for all those type of services but mostly not worth it if I didn’t get hardware for free.
@christa eventually everything will just be me and my room, the platforms will matter nothing to me
@hunterowens I need to finally do this too. we have an audio media server and that + records are great with sonos, but no video
@christa I really wanted to actually host this instance at one wilshire... next dream
@hunterowens one befitting a public servant for sure
@hunterowens whoa wait I misunderstood what you were saying until I googled. one wilshire is a data center?!

@christa yes not only a data center, but literally the largest meet me room in the world (aka the "heart of the internet")

and it's right in DTLA lol... skyscraper next to teh old AT*T switching center long gone that was built during a recession and got taken over by a telecommunications firm, and the proximity to AT&T meant great location for networking

@hunterowens I knew the building I had just assumed it was offices or fancy apartments or something. an excellent instance name, maybe they’ll give you an honorary server rack

@christa @hunterowens Plex is especially magic when you share access with friends. A bunch of people get Taskmaster from us; I get Grand Designs and Seinfeld from others.

The other nice discovery is that most smart TVs have a Plex app so on our recent road trip we could just log into our home video server direct from hotel room televisions.

@hunterowens pretty soon you’re going to start rationalizing how you need k8s at home for all your homelab web services
@robertmitchellv ughhhh plz no
@hunterowens i’ve been watching too many homelab videos on youtube
