When I started (2 days ago.....) on Mastodon.social, I didn't use the Local feed. I didn't find much that interested me.

Now on fosstodon, I find myself checking out the Local feed as much as my own feed.

Glad I made the switch.

@dev_Paul I've had the same experience!

At first, I never imagined that picking an instance could have this impact on my experience. Perhaps that's why I started on mastodon.social last year and didn't find it interesting enough. Didn't stick because I didn't know how to find people to connect with.

Joined Fosstodon 3 days ago, totally different experience. Here it feels like a community and the local feed is always useful, interesting and informative. It's great to be here!

@fmoliveira Same here. Totally different experience. I've interacted with more people here today than I have on .social or even on Twitter.
@dev_Paul I was going to switch, then saw some ppl complain about it being a pain, and now you have me wondering again if I should, not that I know where I'd go, let alone, where I'm coming from.

@sipofwater Well, I had 5 followers when I switched this afternoon. The migration (still going on according to my .social account page.......), it took 2 hours to get 3 followers to this account and none of the ones I followed made it.

So I ended up just following them again. But, the .social instance here was having some server problems with so much traffic.

So I think migrating can be hit or miss.

@dev_Paul My favorite part of Mastodon, for sure. You really don't get that benefit as much on the really big servers.
@dev_Paul I'm intrigued about making a switch now, I remember being a bit bewildered by all the servers when I first signed up in April 🤔

@sarajw That's why I joined social too.

The local feed is almost all tech and searching by hashtag here shows results too, (python, javascript, webdev). On social those searches came back with zero toots.

My couple of posts here have lots of engagement (sorry, evil Twitter word there.....don't tell Chris 😆 ). But I've found some interesting people to follow that way, which is what I want.

@sarajw If you do, maybe keep track of your followers/follows.

I had 5 followers, only 3 migrated over after 2 hours and none of the accounts I follow made it. I've read on the Local feed others had similar issues migrating from social to here.

@dev_Paul thank you for the tips!

Mastodon.social also appears to be beset with issues probably because it's been/being hammered by new people like myself, which also feels like a good reason to jump...
