I set up sciences.social as a place where social scientists can engaging and productive conversations online.

It’ll be supported as long as folks find it useful. Let me know if you have ideas how this space should be run.

@markigra Oh that‘s great, where is it hosted and what‘s your approach to moderation? Let me know if you need help, this could be valuable work
@stefanlaser It's hosted at masto.host . So far there's no official moderation. I ask for all members to be in social science and use real names (which I quickly verify before approving). I think I would like to put in a policy that all non-soc-sci posts have content warnings. The full suite of policies at scholar.social seemed a bit much to me, but would love suggestions. (Of course they have 5000 members and right now we are brand new).
@markigra @stefanlaser Love being on sciences.social and happy to contribute to a thriving community.
Not sure about CWs for non-soc-sci posts (at least not that generically). For example if I post about my long Covid (which renders me incapable of working right now) would that need a CW? Or if I post about photography - a hobby of mine? Or architecture, which is obviously closely related to my research? Just curious where to draw the line as boundaries are fluid in my view

@kerstinsailer @stefanlaser This is a great question and one I'd like to get broad feedback on before putting in "policy". If posts are about social science (broadly construed) no CW. So architecture definitely OK. If they are rants, or potentially triggering, CW. But the other ones I think are in the gray zone where I think we need a some level of consensus.

Will make an announcement and ask for feedback.

@markigra great idea, I was looking for that. do you still accept members? I have tried to join with a new acc but it looks like the registration is still pending.

@markigra I spent the last couple days thinking about setting up similar. Really glad someone has done it.

If you already have a way for people to contribute to server costs, please let us/me know. I'm going to migrate over ASAP.

@markigra Hi, Mark. I set up a trial account on mstdn.social but would like to switch to sciences.social. How does switching servers work when the new server requires an invitation?
@CSchmert You sign up the new account first. I’ll approve, then you can go through the process of moving. I think this post explained that process well, but I haven’t done it myself. If you are moving from a busy server importing your follows can take a while. https://blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2022-11-03_what-i-know-about-mastodon/#how-do-i-move-my-account-to-a-new-server
@markigra @CSchmert It took an hour or two for everything to transfer over from the NZ server I signed up with initially.
Mark - separate question, can we use local emoji like a verified symbol in our display name (https://kushaldas.in/posts/verified-emoji-on-mastodon.html)?

@conradhackett @CSchmert I can enable that emoji (even though it doesn't actually mean anything) and I think it will show up fine in the display name.

I don't have strong feelings about it one way or another, though some might find it confusing. Want me to turn it on?

@markigra Indeed, it won't mean anything on Twitter soon either. If there are a range of emojis, it could be fun to have some options. Anyone who chooses to use one could explain what point they're trying to make with it. Since you approve accounts here, the verified emoji could symbolize "quite likely a genuine social scientist" if they're on sciences.social.
@conradhackett It should be enabled now, if you want to try again.

@CSchmert Shorter answer (I copied/pasted/edited from @absidd)

1. Sign up & get approved
2. In the new account, go to accounts and select "moving from another account".
3. Then enter your old account handle.
4. Now login to your old account, go to accounts, then select "moving to another account".
5. Then enter your new account handle.
6. Submit.

@markigra Thanks for doing this! The may be more of a mastodon technical Q, but do you know how one follows hashtags on here?

@simonlindgren Assuming you are in the "advanced" web mode, you can search for the hash tag, then hit the settings icon in the column that shows up. You can then "pin" the column to your view. That doesn't integrate the hashtag with your timeline, but works reasonably well for me.

A related thing is "groups" where people tag a group like @sociology in posts and if you follow that group all the posts that tag it will show up in your timeline.

@markigra I'm so glad I found this!
@markigra hi, i'm new here, how is everything going?
