โš ๏ธ We are working to restore pixelfed.social, the influx of new users across the fediverse overloaded the server.

We apologize for the inconvenience!

This latest growth spurt has highlighted some opportunities for performance improvements that will be rolling out later this week. #pixelfed

We have to temporarily disable federation so our job queue can catch up, again we're sorry about this!

This is a last resort solution aside from a total outage.

@pixelfed What is the best way to support?
@gustav @pixelfed I think the best way would be to use another smaller instance instead of the flagship one

@pixelfed Why arenโ€™t instances like this limiting the number of users instead of overextending themselves like this?

@pixelfed thank you for putting out the fire. intrigued to hear about the post mortem and clever solutions in due time.

PS i have no clue as to the internals whatsoever, and its probably and all or nothing, but suppose if federation ceased on the local & federated TL but continued elsewhere, would that help at all, or not really, because it couldnt work that way, or if it did it wouldnt make a diff.

@pixelfed That explains it! Thanks for all that you do!
@pixelfed have the main federation issues cleared?
@pixelfed
Many thanks for the continued effort!

@pixelfed Speaks for #Pixelfed, I dare say.

Now to get the people to understand #federation and spread them across instances...

@pixelfed I did not find the registration button/link.
@pixelfed Is this why I'm not able to attach an image to my post right now? #newbie
@derekbruff @pixelfed its an unrelated issue. well related in the sense that both servers are overwhelmed by the same influx but pixelfed.social having issues will only affect users of that server
@liaizon @pixelfed Ah, that makes sense. Still getting us to the server names here. I was thinking that might have been an image handling server, but it's a "regular" server.
@derekbruff pixelfed.social is an instance of Pixelfed which is a different type of software then Mastodon that you are using.

@liaizon Which is why I thought it might be related to my image posting problems... if Mastodon was using some federated image sharing tool like Pixelfed.

It doesn't matter. It's pretty clear at this point that none of these tools are going to make enough sense to me to use them.

@pixelfed thank you for the hard work!
@pixelfed
One could use smaller istances, like https://vizibol.social
Itโ€™s exactly like the federation concept works.
