it's really funny to me that people for some reason go "it's weird that october isn't the 8th month" and then when you say "you're going to hate learning about september, november and december" it blows their mind

i wonder what it is about october that makes people notice

@monorail oct is probably the most recognized prefix b/c of the octagon. we don't learn about the decagon in school (but we do learn about decimals... )
@monorail we might learn about decimal earlier, more as a word without explanation, then explain it only in the context of learning "roots" or something,
@monorail seems like other users have already expressed the "octopus" theory i was gonna respond with
@monorail no one is familiar with the sea creature called the septapus

@monorail

I think it's just familiarity. We know stop signs are octagons, and the "oct" is because they have 8 sides. Sept-, nov-, and deca- are way less common.

Honestly I feel the more fun mind-blowing fact is "it used to be [the 8th month]."

@[email protected] 51 yrs and I never... *mind blown* lol

@monorail this might be a huge reach but i think octo as a prefix is slightly more common than nov or dec, like octopi for example

but idk could just be that it’s earlier than the others?
