UP webinar to tackle medical teaching, simulation in new normal

The COVID-19 pandemic forced everyone to consider other ways of gaining knowledge and acquiring skills, especially in medicine. While many things came to a halt in the ‘new normal,’ health faculties continuously tried to find innovative ways to prepare the next generation of doctors, nurses, and other medical practitioners. These past two years have […]

See you!

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Stop COVID Deaths Webinar #123 "SKILLS TRAINING: How effective is simulation in OB-GYN?". After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

The University of the Philippines, in partnership with the National Telehealth Center, strongly support the promotion of the highest possible standards of care for COVID-19 patients and also seek to protect the entire health system from the devastation of viral spread through measures and interventions that will insulate the whole range of the practice of medicine and all its sub-specialties in the post-ECQ phase and for continuing pandemic preparedness and response. To tap into the experiences of clinicians, hospital administrators, and researchers, a series of webinars will be conducted in order to protect the health systems against COVID-19 by bridging the gap between knowledge and practice in the clinical management of cases in the Philippines. If registration is already at full capacity, a YouTube Live broadcast will also be available on TVUP at http://tvup.ph and http://www.youtube.com/tvupph. To set the tone, here is TVUP's person on the street video. In this POTS, they ask, "What is the importance of simulations? What is its value to you?"

"As a pandemic medical student, parang limited lang yung experience namin-- siguro it would have been better if na-experience namin ng maraming beses yung simulations," Quiela, a Clinical Clerk shares.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Quiela adds that apart from the skills, you also gain more confidence and trust in yourself through these simulations.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Dante, a Medical Student, says, "The goal is to be ready for anything that could happen-- simulation will definitely help with that."

#SCDasks: What are the advantages of undergoing simulation ahead of actual procedure?

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

#SCDAsks: What should teachers do to maximize the benefits of simulation?

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Our main speaker is UP-PGH’s Deputy Director for Health Operations, Dr. Stella Marie Jose. She will share the use of simulation in the teaching-learning of Obstetrics and Gynecology in a tertiary hospital during the pandemic.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Dr. Jose starts with the Hierarchy of the Psychomotor Domain:

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Jose: When PGH became a COVID-19 referral center, only COVID-19 patients were admitted.

The result was a drop in the number of admitted patients.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Jose: In a study, students found simulations to be useful.

Simulators and models provided a structured learning experience and there was a feeling of security.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Jose: Students recommended simulation for all and it must be done before the actual clinical rotation (live patients).

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Jose: According to the literature, the trainees were better prepared beforehand; they were more productive and better prepared for rotation.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

What were the results of these simulations?

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Jose: Simulation will help ensure that every graduate of the PGH Residency Training Program has the clinical competence and surgical skills for the welfare and safety of the patients they will serve.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

The next speaker is Dr. Erlyn Sana, Professor at UP Manila National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Sana: While the training continues, it's only the teaching-learning platform that changed. The same program outcomes remain as "the ends in mind."

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVDI19 #medschool

Sana: When we are doing the real simulation, we expect that the learner is performing in the closest possible teaching-learning environment.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Sana: This is to prepare the trainees to achieve a certain level of automaticity.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Sana: The most important thing in simulation is the quality of supervision.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Up next, we have Dr. Noel Atienza, Dean of San Beda University College of Medicine.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Atienza: In San Beda, we are still hopeful that one day we will have our own hospital, but [now], we can actually start with the whole simulation process.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Atienza: Simulation is important to adequately prepare residents for their training so that when they graduate, there will be less need for them to undo certain errors that they may have learned during their education.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Last but not the least, we have Dr. Teresita Cadiz-Brion, an OB-GYN and former Dean of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Public Health.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Brion on simulations: Trainees learn from their mistakes in a safe environment without hurting any patients.

#StopCOVIDDeaths #COVID19 #medschool

Dr. Brion emphasizes the importance of evaluations during all phases of simulation.
