NewPipe is an open-source streaming client for Android that lets you watch/download from YT without ads. Recently they also added support for PeerTube, Bandcamp and more. I can now stream my favourite albums from Bandcamp without dealing with a browser.

I use this to listen to music without wasting bandwidth on video streams and battery on keeping the screen on.

@chfkch Yup! You can stream archives from #SonojConvention events directly from there :D

@unfa Yep, NewPipe is very nice. I got hooked to the "swipe up down" gestures in the left half of the display for brightness and in the right half for volume (or the other way around).

Using it for some months now through F-Droid I did see the YouTube part break a few times. The documentation notes that one should probably add their own repository to F-Droid to get faster updates than through regular F-Droid.

So if you are confronted with broken YT support - maybe try their repo.

@unfa I knew it had bandcamp support, but I just tried it out for the first time and I have to admit it works really nice.
@unfa I use Invidious for watching YouTube. Is this similar, as in providing an alternative front-end that ensures privacy?
@iactuallylikearchlinux @unfa No, I believe it still makes direct contact with Google (no server to proxy with). An alternative would be Libretube for YT content.
@nebulafoss @iactuallylikearchlinux @unfa With the proxy/tor feature are nice CloudTube, FreeTube also.
@unfa Yeah, really cool app. Listen to music from YouTube without any subscription, window mode and etc 🤩
[email protected] this is great. it's on F-Droid too. this is perfect for listening to comedy videos until I fall asleep. Don't have to worry about bumping the screen.
@unfa I use NewPipe for like 90% of my Youtube watching and 100% of Peertube watching (which is barely anything tbh cause I've simply never stumbled on any Peertube content creators that would capture my attention for longer than a single video or two). Great app UX-wise, you can play stuff in the background and easily download audio/video, and developers also deal fairly quickly in sudden technical changes on Youtube's side that occassionaly break the functionality
