@chjara the thing is having these custom images fixes an extremely long time problem with Misskey: in stock mk, the Ai-chan images are hosted on a separate server because the artist never gave permission for people to redistribute the images, meaning all Misskey instances loaded image data from a remote server. These are made with the CC-BY-SA license, so instances will be able to legally have them self-hosted and reduce cross site requests.

I'd be willing to volunteer but my art skills usually produce images that look just a little bit too off in like all the ways
but god yeah copyright in Japan is such a mess, even American / Disney copyright is preferable to japanese copyright law
