She used to say:

“I am a partisan of violence!
So that they don’t beat us up again
Kill us again
Imprison us again
Disappear with us again!"

"We have to defend ourselves
To be able to defend ourselves
To be able to be violent
To be beautifully violent"

@calliandra Hi! I've been doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for ten years and only recently started reading about how feminism and self-defense work together. I bought three books on a reading list I made. Hopefully I'll work my way through. This book or pamphlet looks pretty cool. I'm going to take a look.

hello @jiujensu
How nice! I'm more of a Muay Thai enthusiast myself, but love BR jiu-jitsu. I hope you find the energy to maybe organize some self-defense workshops in your community, it would be a good use of your knowledge. Yeah, this zine is super cool, and informative.

Ah, Welcome to Mastodon!

@calliandra
The book i read so far, Real Knockouts, by Martha McCaughey, does a great job detailing what goes into a self defense course besides the technique. The ones i typically see only focus on technique & don't address trauma many women have, among other things. If i were going to make a course, I'd have to study up on those existing ones. But bjj has so much, esp in confidence, taking up space, changing our relationship to violence (which usu. only men are allowed) I❤it lol.
@jiujensu yea!!! On taking up space and changing our relation to violence, it reminded my of a Chilean fighter (in the militant sense), the late Luisa Toledo. I'll toot something about her and tag you. wait a sec
