#FediTips

Lots to take in, huh? You’ll get the hang of it! :)

There are lots of blind people on Mastodon. Actively using it. Some tips:

1. Set a display name but don’t add emojis. Even if some screen readers can read it, is it a nice experience? We take milliseconds to skim emojis, screen readers don’t.
2. When posting images, do add alt text. You’re already familiar with this from Twitter. 😊
3. Use CamelCase for hashtags.

@ru why camelcase?

@Aman9das It helps screen readers differentiate the words in the hashtag. Otherwise they think it's all the same word and usually makes a mess out of it.

@ru

@Aman9das @ru CamelCase is better readable, also for people¹ who do not need a screen reader.
¹) "Normal" seeing tootles
@ru oh, do screen readers understand camel case a different words? I didn't know that, but is quite cool. I used it anyways cuz even if I don't need screen readers I find it easier to read anyway.
