Do y'all know of any songs that sound drastically worse under normal audio compression (e.g. MP3-128kbps)?
@io that's not really possible at all, since psychoacoustic lossy compression exactly works by discarding information that doesn't sound good or can't be heard at all
@chj0 sure but I imagine there's some strange combination of sounds that triggers a degenerate case, or certain types of sounds. While MP3 was in development, it was terrible at reproducing speech, so they used Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega as a test piece. Opus on the other hand was designed for speech, so maybe there's some music it's bad at. Maybe just Noise would do
@io @chj0 at 128kbps there is unambiguously noticeable difference - that's why there's such a thing as variable bitrates there as opposed to flac or w/e

for audio quality in general i didn't really start to care about differences in quality or the quality of my headphones until i started listening to symphonic or orchestral works. something like that where there is very many subtle things happening simultaneously is what i would look for
@rats @chj0 there is also the Sound On Sound article about how to notice compression, which includes a zip file of audio so you can follow along, but I've been scared to do it because I don't want to be Cursed by the knowledge of Discerning Compression
