Hands down the best example of what #peertube can become:)

If you haven't discovered it yet, visit https://tilvids.com, an edutainment peertube instance which also includes exclusive content not available on YT;)

Welcome to TILvids! Our goal is to provide you with interesting video content that will make you say, "Today I Learned!"

@lps
Nice, I dig the domain name! 👍
@lps Looks like a nice instance...too bad they seem to not federate...can't follow them or find any of there vids from my instance...

@mgrondin
I assume they don't federate to keep it curated, some instances are flooded with garbage: (

You can subscribe to them, I do on my personal instance. I find it unnecessary to follow instances for the reason above.

Just search for vids within the search bar then click the result to subscribe. If that doesn't work go to their site copy the URL of a bid you like a search again, on your instance.

@lps I suppose...but federation controls are both ways. Meaning there is no harm in allowing other instances to follow yours. Does not mean you have to follow back.

I find it more reliable to follow instances. If a brand new channel gets created that has just the types of videos i want how am i suppose to know about them unless i go to the instance?
@mgrondin Good point, I didn't know they do not allow following their instance. I assume they must approve it.
@lps Maybe so. Did not think of that needing approval...if they do then they don't approve any cause no instances are listen as following them. As far as i know you can't disable showing that...unless they have modified Peertube to hide that...

@mgrondin that seems unlikely, it's possible at this point they prefer being an island. It seems as though they're trying to make a sustainable, donation model with exclusive content through their site.

They may be trying to stop a bad actor from opening another instance, cloning all their content without users being aware of the original source. That's the cynical side of me talking:(

@mgrondin as copied from another interaction I had here on Mastodon.

"I hope/envision that #peertube instances can eventually work as a "web of trust" with curated, intentional instances creating a network, federating together and mirroring each other's content. Giving us the resilience we need."

I've seen this already with a few peertube instances banding together amongst themselves but I can't for the life of me remember which they were. I think they were Japanese.
(cont'd)

@mgrondin

Anyway, I think most (semi-motivated) USERS of a Youtube alternative will resort to following sites, in their browser. Not having their own instances or maybe just having accounts on these sites to subscribe, comment etc without the possibility to upload.

Think freetube/newpipe etc.

@lps Maybe so. But i(for one?) would hate to have multiple accounts over multiple instances.

Even if i was not running my own(like if i was on peertube.social) it would be cumbersome for me to find content from this instance without having an account on it.

> They may be trying to stop a bad actor from opening another instance, cloning all their content without users being aware of the original source.

There is nothing really stopping that anyways. Anyone could download the vids and do just that.

>"I hope/envision that #peertube instances can eventually work as a "web of trust" with curated, intentional instances creating a network, federating together and mirroring each other's content. Giving us the resilience we need."

That is 100% the hope/long term of #Peertube. It's the only way. But they are not even allowing that(yet)

I follow many other instances(some with more questionable content i should weed out...) and mirror the ones i feel closer to(limited by the storage i can afford) and this instance is one i would mirror for for sure.

Anyways i hope someday they allow instance follows.

@mgrondin What I mean to say is with a network type model like this, equally sharing/contributing and mirroring content, users could have an account on only one. Maybe the choice could be as simple as they like the colour/layout of instance y;)

Instance x, y, z all huddle together and mirror content (peertube RAID:) )

User has an account on any of the above and sees all content produced by all 3.
