mastodon.social account suspension

Dear friends,
Sadly, I have to let you know that my account on mastodon.social was suspended. So, I won't be able to get to you there anymore!
I have tried to contact @eugen but, so far, without any success!
I've explained the situation here: https://write.as/7y26skal6f4ecs95.md, in case you're interested to read about the issue.
I'll be around, here, on Friendica, and on Pleroma.
See you soon!
Take care.

@joaopinheiro
That's weird. You often posted about why there's so much hate in the world. Maybe one of those hate-filled individuals felt you were threatening their right to hate.

A Letter on Justice and Open Debate

July 7, 2020 The below letter will be appearing in the Letters section of the magazine’s October issue. We welcome responses at [email protected] Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial. Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and […]

It's extremely ironic that you get censored at the same time Hong Kong is in the first stages of being censored.

This current ultra-sensitivity is an unfortunate byproduct of Western liberal societies overcorrecting for certain shortcomings over the past decades. But this extremism isn't a long-term viable solution either. @Gargron needs to be more balanced.

@SlowRain
Thank you for your words. This is just crazy! It's something I simply can't understand! How can someone whom we admire do something like this, destroy somebody else's work without saying something first. Open Source and the Fediverse is based on trust. We entrust instance admin with part of our lives. I have a different opinion from Eugene about one issue, but I wasn't impolite with him, ever. I contributed to the project. I want aggressive nor offensive. Never! And now this!? And not even a single word!? Toots can be removed by admins, people can be warned and advised. But, in this case, that wasn't even possible because there's no base to sustain such decision!
@joaopinheiro @SlowRain I am really sorry to see this happening to you, João, and specially in the way it was done -- as a notice that a decision had been taken, which is not reversible, and deletes all the work a user has put into their account over all the time they have been there.

And no warning or discussion, just the notice that it's done. I received a similar notice recently too, from another admin of an instance I respected and had an account on. Went there to respectfully inquire about a silence affecting another instance (where I am a moderator), wrote a polite message, which got replied by their admin, and again replied politely by myself.

Next morning I realize my account had been deleted. Gone. 400 posts or so.

We got to keep in mind this could happen, and sadly there's a User Data export function, which will create a backup of all our posts in an instance. But -- there's no software at the moment which can make that data useful, readable, so that we could get back posts we valued and repost elsewhere if desired.

To do this to you when you have been a collaborator in the mastodon project itself, as a translator, without even a warning.

Sorry, João. Not a good day for you, sorry for the late reply as I have been online less than normal -- it's been too hot here this week.

Have a good night!

@yann
Sorry to bother you, but you seem like the person to ask.

I'm looking for a different instance. My requirements are:
English, excellent uptime, fair moderation (no bigotry or cancel culture), non-political, open-minded & respectful, no onerous posting rules.

I'd be happy if it were focused on medieval history, but that's just a pipe dream. A focus on books or writing would be OK, too, but not necessary.

Thanks.

@joaopinheiro

@SlowRain @yann

Hi there!

You're not bothering me at all! It's a pleasure to be of some help.

I'm working on the issue and I'll get back to you soon. I've asked for some advice from another friend who has been researching for this subject for some time too.
@SlowRain

OK, here you are the rest of the information...

It's very hard to find any instance dedicated to History on Fediverse. But you can find users that are also interested in History here.

Then @yann has advised this instance. Although its official language is German, it is a very calm instance whose admin is also a very relaxed person and most part of the toots there are in English, vary rarely in German. The character limit there is 5000 and not 500. This is a very interesting feature! I didn't join them when I was kicked out of mastodondotsocial only because I'm already on Friendica and on Pleroma, where I have very high character limits too and because I decided that I should join an instance where I could speak a little Portuguese from time to time. You can find the translation of their terms and conditions here.

I'll add that I'm enjoying Friendica very much. This is a more mature network and people have some interesting connections here. And we can even connect with Diaspora from here.

I know that this information isn't exactly what you were expecting, but I find it very difficult to find an instance that will fulfil all your requirements.

I hope you find this information useful.
@joaopinheiro @yann
Thanks. Tell me more about Frendica. Are there any drawbacks being there as opposed to a Mastodon instance? Can everyone still see each other & interact with each other?
@SlowRain

Good morning!

Yes, we can see each other and some more because Friendica connects with Diaspora too.

The only drawback might be the fact that I had to import my contacts one by one because batch import didn't work for me. It was something I did in 10 minutes though. It might work for you though.

Perhaps it's not as shiny as Mastodon, in terms of image, layout, I mean, but it is cleaner and it even has some features which are much better. For example, you can write up top 500.000 characters, you can always edit your posts and toots look much better on Friendica because we have a toot editor.

I'd say this: try it and if you don't like it you can always erase your account easily.

I've opened my account on libranet.de. The server is in Helsinki. The same admin has a second server venera.social.

I think the best thing you can do is really check it for yourself. To me, now, it's the network I like the most.
@SlowRain @joaopinheiro

Hello SlowRain and sorry for taking so long to respond -- this account is not one that I use frequently, so I just found the notification now, and am promptly responding. :)

João had sent me a Direct Message to my main account -- which is now @rgx .

He told me about your request and I looked around a bit and could not find any instance with a theme close to Medieval History. I did locate a few users who are interested in History and passed the info on to João, who relayed it to you, with a cc here as well.

The German instance João mentioned is the one I have selected as my main home now, as it has some advantages compared to my previous one (which suffers from some fediverse blocking which is damaging for my blog publishing and announcements). I would recommend it, as João said it's open to us English speakers, and has a capable and understanding admin (plus it uses the Glitch-Social variant of Mastodon, allowing some nicer text formatting, etc).

João has mentioned Friendica and says he likes it -- but the address he's using ( @libranet.de ) seems to be open registrations only at certain times (it's open right now - at https://libranet.de/register )

https://friendi.ca has information on the Friendica project. If you want to see and give it a try, there's a Try out instance where accounts only last for a week, being auto-deleted after that.

https://tryfriendica.de/ is the place, and I would recommend it. There are other, more permanent instances in case you want a Friendica account for normal use.

Feel free to contact me for any more info, I will be glad to help -- use the @rgx address for best results. 😃
