New obsession: learning to play the #Clarinet. I love its sound, plus it's so portable compared to the #timpani that I usually play 😅

#shotonzenfone6

might start posting some clips on here to document my progress. if that turns out to be a bad idea, i can blame @huuhaa ;)

Was playing a Chinese song (月亮代表我的心) for my mom on mother's day. Tripped over some notes but the effect was cooler than I intended 🤭

Original song sounds like this: (in a different key) https://youtu.be/hj4bnnek9MU

Let me entertain you with The Entertainer! Or rather my embarrassing beginner's rendition... Might not be a good idea to use the RODE mic after all as it picks up all the details of my laboured breathing and bad playing 😳

Memory from Cats (musical), played to a collection of memories from mid-May over the past decade. Things I miss: travel, playing with the orchestra, hanging out with people...

(Yeah, could've added piano accompaniment to the video, maybe next time 🤷‍♀️)

One year ago: Trips for orchestra and conferences AND visiting friends & family 😭😭😭

Next 12 days: Estonia (orchestra concert trip), Spain (conference), Sweden (visit friends). At least no jet lag to worry about! After that a short break, and then Netherlands, China, and Taiwan. All before the end of June.

Theme from Dvorak's #NewWorldSymphony - Largo. Originally played by the English Horn, transposed and butchered by me. Now I'm just getting complacent and transposing everything to the comfortable lower register. Need to break out of my comfort zone and face the high notes. 😱

#oldcarolnewtricks Week 3.

The #PinkPanther series features an incompetent inspector Clouseau, so this White Penguin series gets me as the inept #Clarinet player 🤪

(also an incompetent videographer - didn't think the sun's glare would totally wash out Fuzzbutt the penguin until too late)

This week I'm gonna focus on “embouchure”, so maybe no videos to torture my followers 😆

Haven't given up on the #clarinet yet, just practicing a couple times a week instead of daily like the first 2 weeks 😆 Having a backing track really emphasize how out of tune I am, but I haven't quite learnt how to properly tune it yet. I suspect it's very different from tuning the timpani 😂
@cybette
Playing that song is worth it alone to learn the clarinet.

@SlowRain

Totally! Now I just need to learn to play it *well* 😅

@Carol Chen Haha, Awesome!

@harald thanks for the encouragement!
@cybette
Hey, do you use a reed knife for that thing?

@SlowRain

what's a reed knife? I'm a total n00b 😳 I won't know how to use one 😅

@cybette
I wish I had an answer for you, but all I know is that they are a thing.

The reason I ask is because there is (was?) a foreigner in Kaohsiung who sells them. He's completely fascinated with sharpening things. He even sharpened up a cleaver & shaved with it once. I don't know anything about the quality of his reed knives, but he sure can put a wicked-sharp edge on a straight razor.

@SlowRain

shaving with a cleaver? *shudder*

well, I guess that's his thing :)

I was reading up on reeds, and they come in different thicknesses to produce different types of sounds/tones. but you can buy them at all kinds of thicknesses/lengths/widths for a couple €uros each, so maybe for those diehard audio connoisseurs who need nuanced control of the sound, they'll use reed knives to sculpt their reeds. I haven't seen one being used and I've been around musicians all my life.
