@cliff1976 I have this vanity instance here on spacewizard.space, but I keep thinking I should just hop on a general instance and shut it down because why keep a whole big app going on a whole domain just for one account I mildly use?.....

How's mastodon.social?

@wizard I mean, it always works and it costs me nothing. I wanted my own masto instance when a hardware-owning buddy was in charge of it. But I'd have to set up an nginx+Rails system for it with more than 1GB RAM (don't already have one), so that's $120 a year ($10/mo. at DigOc). I guess I'm comfy here. Lotta weirdos, which reminds me a lot of exploring ISCABBS in ca. 1994. So there's almost a nice retro vibe to it.

@wizard I like the idea of deAOLifying the internet stuff I want to use. I also tried to set up a pixelfed instance yesterday, but the installation instructions leave something to be desired, and I did not manage to adapt the Arch instructions to fit my Ubuntu VPS, so I said aww, screw it.

I think I am having trouble finding people to follow whose content interests me and who are interested in my content. ISCABBS 25 year ago felt easier, but these youngsters here, with their toots and whatnot

@cliff1976 I started here on dice.camp, a roleplaying game specific instance, but it never got updated to new versions of mastodon, seemed a little abandoned. The people I follow/followers now seem to be a mix of self-identified Hackers e.g. from Hackers.town and rpg people.
@cliff1976 Might be good to just blend into the crowd at mastodon.social
@wizard No reason we can't do that *and* use a specific instance for a special interest group, right? I mean other than the inconvenience of having more than one set of credentials, I guess. But even my parents can do that.
@cliff1976 I actually do have two accounts already -- this one for English and @edheil for Esperanto. :)
