Ok folks. Need some help. Husband & I are thinking of moving out of Delhi/NCR in a couple of years, to a smaller, cleaner, greener city.

I want to quit the 9-5 & focus on art. Husband wants to pursue either tennis - he runs an academy in Delhi currently - or woodworking (he’s India’s first DIY woodworking instructor).

Place should have easy access to medical facilities & should be cheap because we plan to live off our modest savings.

We’ve been considering Goa; any other suggestions?

@shinjini try Kerala
@rajagopal very high language barrier, no?
@shinjini no...English tamil hindi ok

@shinjini

Depending on the region yes. A lot speak Hindi and English but varies from region to region.

@rajagopal

@Vishsai yes, and also the North South divide can become quite stark sometimes - again depending on region. Would rather avoid that.. although Kerala overall is quite liberal still (politically)? @rajagopal
@shinjini @Vishsai have ever heard about bangla labour migration. to Kerala...of all places? ever thought why?
@shinjini @Vishsai also do see fim ek duje ke liye
@rajagopal I had seen it as a kid. Don’t really remember much now. @Vishsai

@shinjini

Well politically free from BJP mostly.

Political violence is limited to certain areas. Very limited nowadays.

North south divide is very less. As he said there is a very high migrant population here. From entire north India.

Though labour cost are high compared to other places. There are good pockets to learn, teach and exhibit art work.

Again it's about selecting your region. Cost of living also varies region to region.

@rajagopal

@Vishsai thanks buddy! Will float the idea to the husband. And will ask you for more specific region-wise help if we do decide to look at Kerala as an option too. @rajagopal

@shinjini Another few places that I would recommend is Coorg in Karnataka, Deharadun and Pondicherry.

All are good and meets your need.

Coimbatore is another good option but you might face a language barrier there.

@rajagopal

@Vishsai ah yes, Pondicherry. Wanted to find out about Aurobindo ashram and how the living there thing works! Let me remind the husband to speak to his friend who lives there. @rajagopal
@shinjini Nagpur is a smaller, greener, cleaner city. Anywhere you live in this city you can commute to your workplace/business in 20 minutes. It is cheaper than Goa.
Centrally situated and connected to all major cities by overnight train journeys, flights (max 3 hours).
There is need for a good tennis academy.
People are friendly, down to earth, easy going.
If anyone tells you we are bigots because of RSS, don't believe them. We are not. I rest my case. Hope the Mayor also sees this and pay.
@VivekT wow! That’s a great advertisement for the city. And not bigoted despite RSS headquarters being there?? I find that hard to believe! You wouldn’t believe the bigotry on Delhi/Gurgaon.
@shinjini No it's not. Of course we have the nutters too but they are outnumbered.
@shinjini I have been getting good reviews about Pune. Near to Mumbai, yet far.

@Iwalkalone I’m from Pune. Grew up and studied there. Parents are still there. 😉

Cost of living isn’t low, though.

@shinjini Well, then you know. Nothing like a place that you already know. Cost of living isn't low, anywhere.
@Iwalkalone hmm...well...
@shinjini Frankly, I don't see any city other than Chandigarh, Jaipur, Pune, Kochi, Trivandrum to settle down. Small enough to move around, yet not big a city. Language is just an excuse, if you don't mind my saying it.
@shinjini Don't know enough about east/ north east to comment.
@Iwalkalone maybe it is...the husband is excellent at coming up with excuses and me at parroting them 😝

@Iwalkalone Pune. No. It's no more that quiet little town. It's almost on the verge of becoming another Mumbai.

@shinjini

@musafir @Iwalkalone @shinjini either down south, or up the foothills... Uttarakhand/Himachal..

@KayKap uttarakhand is quite racist. And they fleece the “plains people”. My FIL lived in a small town just short of Nainital.

Husband can’t stand the winter & monsoon there. Well, he’s not too thrilled about Goa weather either, so....

And there’s not too much to do there. Quiet is good, but that quiet also isn’t. @musafir @Iwalkalone

@shinjini @KayKap @musafir Well, Elon Musk has been talking about reaching Moon in the next 3 years. Make up your mind, cause that'll be the only place left, the way things are going.
@shinjini Goa is on the top of the list for almost everybody; guess will meet you there in another 2-4 years!
@KayKap yes! Especially all the artist types. Which is why we zeroed in on it. Plus some folks who stay there said we can easily manage in about 25-35k each month, incl rent, which is kinda awesome.
@shinjini if you own your own place in Delhi, can put it up on rent, will help with income. Nainital is not the proper place, not its foothills... Goa is ok, weather wise better than the cold.. Can always jump in and out of wherever... u stay...

@KayKap yeah, we have our own tiny flat in Gurgaon. So that is going to give us some money coming in. And hubby doesn’t want to jump from place to place.

I married a tree! 😭 It took me long enough to convince him to move out of here. If I tell him we’ll jump between Goa and somewhere else, he’ll plant himself right back here 😭😭😭

@shinjini not jump, but travel out once in a while... am planning to do that once retired; use Mumbai flat to earn rent and work part-time and also pursue other stuff... But then we are already a group of 6 friends who are kinda planning the move...
@KayKap @shinjini All of us should move to Kodaikanal and chill. And eat apples
@wabbster apples!! Well, make mine an apple crumble with custard, and I’m game! 😝 @KayKap
@KayKap that’s good then. Husband has some friends who are already in Goa/moving there. Woodworking buddies. Hopefully they’ll convince him.
@shinjini what about the mountains? There are places in uttarakhand and Himachal that might make sense.
Or Sikkim perhaps?
@hackiechan severe winter is a problem. No no for hubby.
@shinjini Srinagar isn't too bad.
A couple of years, right? Yeah, we'll sort out the Healthcare & wood-working scene properly by then, i am sure.
The aab-o-havaa is quite nice really.. No, wait!
Some lovely cities down south as well, been to Pondi & Tirunelveli, could easily see myself settling there.

@Owaisbukhari15 Srinagar is beautiful! Pahalgam even more so!

More than woodworking, I hope we can sort out the mess that we’ve made in Kashmir.

@shinjini Mysore, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Goa, Pondicherry
@ashwin Goa is under serious consideration :)
@shinjini Yes, I vote for Mysore! Studied there for three years. Still a chilled out place. @ashwin
