There's something deep in the human brain where a specific person, or even a small-enough-to-be-identifiable group of people one day goes "OK WE'RE ALL GOING TO DO THIS NOW, THIS INCLUDES YOU" the knee-jerk instinctual reaction is "What? Why? I'm not gonna do that! Fuck you!"
And on the other hand, if it's much more gradual and kinda already feels like everyone is doing it, people will generally roll with it unless they happen to have a big problem with This One Specific Issue
Basically, if people feel like a very small group is demanding that they change their behavior, they will generally resist it and/or hate it, depending on what it is and who it's coming from, cause people are stubborn and petty like that
But if it just sorta feels like A Thing That Is Happening, generally in the world, then yeah sure why not, as long as everyone else is doing it, I don't have time to dwell on this I got bills to pay.
Idk why I'm harping on this I guess I just think it's useful and more people should do it. Expressing mild confusion and/or pointedly ignoring someone's bad take will do much more than giving a righteous appeal to their better nature or painstakingly explaining Why They Are Wrong.
"Haha, what? ... Yeah okay dude, sure..." will linger in someone's mind far longer than a lecture will.
