Aaron Swartz. Born on this day! November 8, 1986. He would have been 33 today.

November 9 will be observed all over the world as Aaron Swartz Day — an annual event to celebrate Aaron Swartz’s legacy as an activist, programmer, entrepreneur & political organizer.

Hackathons would be organised, where diverse & passionate folks would gather & exchange ideas with each other, who believe in Freedom of #Information & #Education and Securing Digital Space for all.

Remember 9th November! 💜

Aaron’s life was cut short in 2013, after he was charged under the notoriously draconian Computer...

@BhavanaVarun RIP Aaron.. Your spirit will never be forgotten!
@BhavanaVarun https://securedrop.org is participating in a remote hackathon on the #AaronSwartzDay Aaron started the project with two other people.
@kushal Amazing! Thank you for sharing. His legacy must be remembered. 💜
@BhavanaVarun daw the documentary on him 2 years ago. He was a good one
@BhavanaVarun @Lawandemotions and I am in tears. Again. Every time I think of Aaron.
@ashwink @BhavanaVarun
He would have been 33 today. 😢
@Lawandemotions @BhavanaVarun sigh. Went to the memorial screening in SF a few years back. Every single person in the audience was crying.
@ashwink @Lawandemotions He'll be missed forever! His deeds and legacy stands tall. In our hearts and our actions, he'll be always with us. 💜
@BhavanaVarun @ashwink @Lawandemotions Spoke to him on email multiple times on long threads. arranged his live remote talk once in NIT Calicut. We almost planned an India visit too , but couldn't materialize. A big loss
@anivar @BhavanaVarun @Lawandemotions I cannot get over the simplicity of the code in web.py. Like poetry.

@anivar
Visionary, Genuine soul & a crusader. That's how the world must remember Aaron Swartz.

"Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves,” Aaron wrote in his Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto.
“Forcing academics to pay money to read the work of their colleagues? Providing scientific articles to those at elite universities in the First World, but not to children in Global South? It’s outrageous & unacceptable.”

We remember him! 💗

@BhavanaVarun this is how a single person can change world for better. He wanted information to be free like it should be but was harassed by govt and power that controls the world.
Rest in Peace Aaron. Your legacy still lives on
@DrNikhil_P_B @BhavanaVarun Alexandra, #scihub (-free papers from #academia) founder is in the same boat with cases against her in USA.
@svaksha @DrNikhil_P_B True! Shameful how activists are made to run for life! While criminals and chrony capitalists take leisures being in power.
@BhavanaVarun @DrNikhil_P_B In this case it's publishing companies profiting off the unpaid labor of #researchers writing papers for free and reviewing it for free. Ironically, you need to do research for a PhD but today it's all about citations. Here #capitalism capitalizes on PhD students doing near slavery labour as they have no rights to the paper they wrote. The irony of #academia!
