Should the number of accounts that can be followed by new users be reduced at the expense of the import feature in an effort to reduce follow spam?

@Gargron
Something to consider if implemented is that it should probably default to previous behavior for sites with closed registration. Follower import seems like an important feature, but it does seem something needs to be done about mass follow bots

@Gargron I'd recommend a different route:

extend the spam filtering to also include bios and have the input for that filter be users that were suspended

@ben This might help. Although currently the spam filter doesn't even run for local posts, only remote ones. It needs some readjustements...
@Gargron what if we empower users to set standards for the types of follow requests they want auto-denied through a user toggle-able option?

* block follow requests for accounts < x days old
* block follow requests for accounts with < y followers
* etc

@Gargron

Honestly, it feels like the kind of thing worth setting up detection for (rapid following sends a note to the admin kinda deal) to me?

Maybe something for connected instances where admins can indicate approval for instant import from that instance? Floodgates for those that need it, open doors for everybody else. Depends on the admins, of course. (But everything does.)

@Gargron Is the main aim user experience, or DDOS profile reduction? If the first, what about a rate limit on the number of follow requests one instance can make to a remote account before some shift in notification style?
@Gargron err, that should be DoS, not DDoS.
@Gargron The import feature was very important to me when I had to switch accounts on a short notice (witches.town :c )
@Gargron Can you determine the age of imported accounts? Maybe there's a threshold at which delaying notifications is appropriate.
@Gargron absolutely, I would like to limit to 50 follows daily then Block account follows for the next 12 hours
@Gargron yes - until a number of posts
@Gargron I would like to setup some limits for bots:
max follows 50/daily on the same instance + 50/daily on other instances
max following: 1000 on same instance, 1000 on external instances.
@Gargron in that case, you store a dictitorship republic and everyone will say goodbye to mastodon and mastodons. You neeed to find another way to fight spams than limiting followeds and/or followers. Captcha, email verification, ... etc or between hundreds of tools you can use the realise this purpose.
