"We have enormous freedom. That’s not a gift that was given to us, it’s a legacy that was left to us by centuries of struggle. By centuries of people that most of whose names are completely forgotten, the ones who created the freedom and the rights we now have, and that will be taken away unless you constantly defend them."

- Noam Chomsky

Unfortunately Chomsky is a bad example of what freedom is since he has political thoughts that contradict himself as the fact that he calls himself anarchist and cite "rights" as legitimate, even if they are rights forged by the state.
Freedom is something that needs to be constantly defended, but not as a right granted by the state.

@tumeo @dansup
L take. That’s up there with questioning a person’s belief in socialism because of the things they do to survive in a capitalist society.

I despise the Democratic Party yet I have consistently voted for their candidates to prevent far worse candidates from getting elected. That in no way contradicts my political beliefs.

@dansup
Sometimes I think the reason we have particular rights is because early society lacked the technology and organisation to restrict that freedom, and then people resisted its loss even after technology and society advanced.

If there were no such thing as cars, but someone invented them tomorrow, probably only professional drivers would be allowed to operate them. But since they were invented before the database and the administrative state, it's easy to get a licence.

@dansup
One of our fundamental constitutional #rights is that new taxes can only be imposed with the consent of the legislature. There are theoretical reasons for why that is required, but isn't the real reason that King John was incapable of administering a tax system without the co-operation of the nobility and the wealthy yeomen?
@dansup And that's exactly what is happening: they are constantly being taken away piece by piece...
@dansup That's true, so we should thank the ones who gained the freedom for us and protect our rights.
@ruokimf @dansup
Their names are lost in history books and their principles whitewashed by capitalism, as wee see with MLK.

@dansup @musicman

the term freedom has been stolen by conservatives and libertarians.

@wjmaggos @dansup just don't say much about that org in a crowded theater!

Even if that is true, that does not mean we should dismiss the concept of freedom. The people on the left need just as much freedom as people on the right. Anyone advocating otherwise doesn't understand the meaning of the word.

@dansup Chomsky has been more than happy to sacrifice the freedom of Ukrainians to Russia, if it means he can stick a thumb into the eye of the West and NATO.

He has blindness for imperialism and war crimes committed by anybody but a western nation.

To hell with Noam Chomsky.

Loops

@krolden It has to be that way from a legal standpoint, otherwise you could file a copyright claim when loops redistributes your posts over the network.

@scott
lmao what?

If what you say is true then why isn't something like that in every other fedi service TOS? I can't find a single instance of someone trying to pull something like this. If I am wrong, please enlighten me.

@krolden They are opening themselves up to be sued or DMCA takedown notices if they don't have something like this in their TOS. You are giving them your copyrighted content, and they are distributing it. They need a license to do that, otherwise it is copyright infringement.

It is not a big concern for smaller instances that aren't making money. But let's say you create an Android app and you charge a couple of dollars to help cover the costs and put some food on the table. They could be sued for "selling" your copyrighted content.

Just because a lot of fedi platforms don't protect themselves legally does not mean you should not protect yourself legally.
@krolden To be fair, I think it could be worded different, but legally, those things need to be in the TOS to be protected from copyright claims.
@dansup Truth.
Only authoritarians make the mistake of freedom as something given from above.
