the idea that absolutely everything has to be profitable is a recent one. the US government fully understood that the massive expenditures on the highway system were simply a means of bootstrapping economic growth.

@Rewhan @LexYeen public transit is too expensive, its actually more efficient for the government to pay to maintain heavily used roads and then also pay the private companies profiting from those roads. i am an economics brain genious

Car companies are in cahoots to help defund public transit. It keeps poor people from getting to/from work and it drives the expansions ever outward into suburbs and sub suburbs, making cars mandatory to get from home to work.
