i find it strange whene people try to repurpose the mary sue concept as like "it wasnt always misogynistic" when the protagonist being inexplicably amazing at everything is the biggest trope in western storytelling
like have you READ the iliad?
fanfiction writers love to insert themselves into their stories in order to live out their fantasies, much unlike REAL writers, who NEVER do that
@garfiald
Literally can't think of a writer who doesn't do this. Respect writers who are at least honest about it.

@garfiald
I can't read a Smiley novel without realising that David Cornwell has probably never done it.

@garfiald
on top of that, not all fanfic writers are cishet white men

so there's also the matter of seeing themselves represented in the media and the stories they want to live in, in the WAY they want to be represented

@monorail its pretty good but every character is a mary sue because they're all incredibly valiant and amazing warriors "because i said so"
@garfiald strange to me, that you're main character is able to overcome obstacles, and drive the story forward. . . i'd much prefer, if she died in the first fight, and a MAN finishes the story, in a sensible, realistic manner
@laurie @garfiald one guy I saw Infinity War with complained that a woman got to say one cool line instead of T’Challa right before the Wakanda battle
@garfiald HaVe yoU noTiced How Rey fRoM StAr wArs is amAziNg at eveRythIng? I thInK thIs is The SJW ageNdA aT pLay.
I'm VerY iNtelLigEnt.
@garfiald
Here's my male protagonist who is witty and rich and irresistible to women despite having no noticable job beyond "working" on his screenplay for seven years
@garfiald the Mary Sue concept is because those writers were having their protagonists be exceptional in the wrong ways (unconventionally attractive, friends with everyone, creative, solves problems with lateral thinking) instead of the correct one (grizzled, barely tolerated, single-minded, solves every problem with a sword or a gun)
@garfiald always feels like the protagonist is impossibly good at everything or basically exists as a comedic punching bag. There never seems to be room for normal humans with strengths and flaws.
