!!!!

The cutting laser works!!!

We successfully had it cut though 3mm plywood unsupervised!!!!!

The line is nice and thin and it is very very precise.

It takes longer than the CNC machine, and instead of dust there are fumes to worry about so we are making a better enclosure, but it works!!

I am so goddess damned excited. I have been trying to get this to work for the last two weeks.

And now my laser cutter works!!

There are of course a lot of things to do to make it better, but it works!!

This is the backside. The laser didn't scorch the wood on the back so you can see how thin the cut actually is.
@inmysocks
A neat trick for this is to use masking tape on the cutting side, which takes the smoke marking, and then peels right off without having to sand off the marks.
@iMartyn oh, that is a good tip. Thank you! I will start doing that.

@inmysocks @iMartyn

Painter's tape works too. We had some of the really wide (2"?) stuff at my old makerspace.

What laser are you using? I've been thinking of building or buying a cutter since I don't have access to one anymore.

@solarpunkgnome @iMartyn we started out with some cheap no name 5W thing from china but after we got past the proof of concept stage with the frame we gut a 10W laser from here http://endurancelasers.com

I think that for most non-industrial things a properly focused 5W would be fine, we got it to barely cut though 3mm mdf and plywood, but it was at the edge of what the laser could do and it overheated a bit. Since we want to make prototype robot parts with it we got the more powerful one
