He was nearly my father’s age, and a man who lived almost entirely on the surface. But he wasn’t a fool, or cruel. And more to the point, I was reasonably certain he wasn’t going to try and devour my soul. My expectations for a husband had lowered. --Irina
I really enjoyed this book. It's clearly inspired by Rumpelstiltskin/Rumpelstilzchen, but it's definitely its own story and not just "3rd-millennium author retells classic fairy tale." The author does a great job of blending in (pseudo)Baltic culture and mythology, as well as providing perspective on the prevailing attitudes toward Jewish people at the time. The depth and complexity of the characters was refreshing, particularly given the genre.
