Ok, so looking at getting a new gaming group together, and it got me to thinking about GMing, so I'm going to throw out a discussion topic: how do you feel about behind the screen rolls? Secret spot/search checks, etc.
Like them, dislike them, you tell me. I have my own mixed opinions but I'll wait to see what other people think.
@Cygwulf when it comes to fights I roll openly so they can see if it hits or not and so. But otherwise I mostly roll behind my hand. It keeps the players on their toes when I suddenly roll for something and they don't know for what or the result of the roll. And it's good I think if they don't know the limit a merchant have for succeeding in persuasion, they'll just know if it's a fail or success ^^
@BrokenBonessa This mostly mimics what I've moved toward. Particularly with checks like search, knowledge, awareness, etc, where failure and a negative success (e.g. lack of anything to find) look the same.
