I'm actively recruiting volunteer devs for a native Signal / Signal-like client in Gtk, in the hopes that we can bring it to the @Purism Librem 5 phone. Please contact [email protected] if interested.

I love everything you do!
It is a dream come true with the #Librem 5!

@diggity @Purism it feels problematic to ask for free OSS labor for your business. 🤷‍♂️
@mperham @Purism garnering community support is the first step in deciding how/where best to allocate resources and build a strategy.
@diggity aren't third-party clients for signal barred from using their servers

@diggity @Purism
Q: Can somebody help me implementing this thing A, which is valuable for some users.

A1: Why don't you use B which is in some fields better than your thing but has other tradeoffs.

A2: I don't think you should implement this thing. Because I like C more.

A3: ...

I've heard of the Librem 5 phone... Also heard it is very secure... More info please? Maybe a website...?? Feel free to message directly..

Introducing the – Librem 5 by Purism

@diggity

@Purism
A nice looking device...lopking forward to April 2019, when it apparently is being launched. Hope there are enough apps for it.

@diggity @Purism Question is, will m0xie let it access the official OWS servers?
Afaik m0xie always had a problem with clients not under the control of OWS, be it modifications of the original clients or newly-written third party ones. He threatened to throw them off the server.
@diggity @Purism doesn't signal have a fishy trademark policy that is weirder than the old firefox? they even forbid forks to use official servers

@diggity @Purism

"volunteer devs to create a whole new application using GTK for this protocol set developed by an angryboy who hates volunteer apps being made for his protocol"

Mister I been making a signal client but if you want my help you gotta help me pay the bills.

@the_gayest_doggo @Purism I understand the challenges and prior conflicts here. flamewars won't help, and I'm just exploring at the moment to see what plan we can come up with.
@diggity @[email protected] out that you are are asking for monumental labor for free isn't a flame war.

@the_gayest_doggo I'm looking for community support to build a strategy and team, so that we can figure out how best to allocate resources.

That wasn't what I meant... I meant a flameware with OWS is not productive, and I'm well aware of the past history there. I do of course appreciate your comments and perspective.

@diggity @Purism will OWS let you connect to their servers with your own client app?

AFAIK they are against it, see LibreSignal: https://github.com/LibreSignal/LibreSignal/issues/37#issuecomment-217211165

Please add LibreSignal to f-droid · Issue #37 · LibreSignal/LibreSignal

Dear maintainers, I'm reading here: #28 (comment) that the people behind f-droid are willing to have LibreSignal distributed there. What they're waiting for is a pull request from you (last...

@diggity @Purism Volunteer as in no payment at all? Come on, you're a company ...
@diggity it's outside of my current skill set, but i wish you luck on that. i use gnome and gtk apps on many of my computers. Just as constructive criticism, i think it would be better (for various reasons) to say "xmpp with omemo" instead of "signal/signal like". If people don't know what that is, at least they have the proper terms so that they can look it up. Also, using the underlying terms is better PR for Purism, IMHO. Out of curiosity, what will the backend be written in? or does that depend on the devs you are able to attract?
@diggity @Purism
so has anything come of this? is there a repo somewhere?
@Maltimore @Purism there are a handful of feasible options, but at the moment the best option looks like tweaking the Signal client for Ubuntu Touch / UBports. Happy to add you to the list of people who have reached out, and I should have an update soon after I iron out some details with the UBports maintainer.
@diggity @Purism
fantastic! I'm quite interested.

@diggity

I have tried to write a summary of all work related to Signal on Gnu+Linux systems on Purism forum. A lot of people ask for such an app.

Maybe you have some updapte from your discussion with OWS, UBports dev or others?

Here is the link to the topic:

Probably wont use Signal as it’s endorsed by Edward Snowden. Once CIA, always CIA. His “capture” in Russia makes no sense logically (research this yourself). Is Telegram better? No idea.

@diggity @Purism Hello - just curious: how did it go?
@diggity @Purism I'm trying to organize people who are interested in working on this: https://fosstodon.org/@be/106046813321269823
Be :copyleft: :fedora: (@[email protected])

Is anyone interested in starting a new adaptive GTK Rust client for Signal for Linux smartphones and desktops? I wrote a post on the @PINE64 forum about my reasoning for this technical approach: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=13610 Please boost. *Do not respond to this with criticism of Signal*. If you're annoying about that, I'll block you.

@diggity @Purism how has this progressed?
@whynothugo it's been a while since I looked into this as I haven't contracted at the company since late 2019. Seems like this is doable via Anbox these days on L5 and also via some other more kludge-y methods. Good luck and happy hacking! https://www.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/k0c8jd/signal_on_the_librem_5_via_axolotl_server_mode/
Signal on the Librem 5 via axolotl (server mode) and a full screen firefox tab (calls dont work on axolotl)
