Do you ever think Mastodon (the band) could have better mixing, maybe they're sludgy on purpose (sludge metal?) but it's so hard to hear them on the same volume as like, anything else
@Gargron You need your own band Eugen. You can toot out some heavy metal.
@Gargron depends on the album, the later ones have weird mixing bc they layer the shit out of the vocals
@Gargron
That dirty sticky sludge that be feelin like home.
For anyone who came up moshing in dive bars with shitty sound systems I guess.

@Gargron Well, Mastodon was heavily influenced by Melvins. Melvins are considered to be very influential on the early sludge metal sound. (along with grunge, as a side note.) That "hard to hear" sound is characteristic of sludge metal. That's almost certainly intentional on Mastodon's part.

As an aside, if you've never listened to Melvins' Houdini, you really should.

@Gargron you kind of need to hear them loud. But yes, I agree. The same can be said for a lot of other metal albums. There is not enough dynamics in albums, everything has to be loud as hell.
@Gargron I think that's part of the feel they're going for. Bands like them and Baroness are really embrassing the old school, mix-everything-to-overdriven-tape analogue vibe. It is kinda of a bummer, because it hides how super technical some of their stuff is sometimes.
