Pitch: self-driving cars but they're on rails and carry hundreds of people and have an operator and they're called "trains" instead.
@annika I liked that startup pitch for a new subscription service, "Netflix but for books" where he forgot about (or was oblivious to) public libraries.
@annika oh and pickup isn't from your house but at a designated public location at certain times of the day (Not on demand)

@annika Nuclear powered trains. Where the power station is stationary and the electricity gets to the train over wires.

Self driving cars that go down the middle of the road on tracks and share the roads with cars and bicycles. Powered by overhead electricity lines. We could call them "Trams".

They don't even need rails.

Imagine something, I call it a trolley bus: a tram, but it's a bus with overhead wires. It has tyres so it goes on the road! No digging up the road required, just a bit of painting.

@jbond @annika

@wu_lee @annika If we put a big battery in the bus, maybe we wouldn't even need the wires. Just charge the battery at the start and end of each shift and during the driver's coffee/comfort breaks.
@annika currently watching the slow YouTube channel, it's very calming

@annika the interesting part is, we already know how to make driver-less trains for decades now, but self driving cars are still in their infancy.

I mean, if that's not the proof this shit is purely ideological I don't know what is.

SkyTrain

TransLink has three SkyTrain lines connecting Metro Vancouver – the Expo, Millennium & Canada lines. See schedules, station maps & elevator maps here.

@gemlog @vfrmedia It's funny, I stopped myself from saying "no operator" because jobs. Capitalism is a hell of a drug.
@annika @vfrmedia When my kids were little I'd drive them down to vancouver sometimes (a 14hr+ drive south, so 2 days). Planetarium, kids science center, Imax, maritime museum etc.
After the 1st trip I realized it was way cheaper and they had far more fun sitting in the front of those driverless trains pretending to drive it. Day passes are cheap! :-)
@annika @gemlog in London the Docklands Light Railway is mostly automated but they still have a human at all times who can drive the train in an emergency situation (this has been the case for about 31 years, when I lived there in early 90s I used to visit random places on it simply because it was cool and high tech for the time, and didn't cost extra when you had the travelcard (back then it was safe for a teenager to go into other postcode areas without risk of hassle from locals)
@vfrmedia @annika postal code gangs??

@gemlog @annika yep, they have been a thing for about a decade now.

Youths from different postcodes form gangs and threaten each other in rap music and there are sometimes actual incidents of violence.

It even spread to Ipswich, but there are only 4 main postcode areas for the whole town!

I'm not even sure how/why it started as the early rave scene which I was heavily into was totally the opposite..

@vfrmedia @annika Wow. That's bizarre! "I don't hate you because of your skin colour, your gender or your politics." "No, I hate you because of your postcode!"
@gemlog @annika there are literally whole documentaries online about this dating back from 2006/7, and a lot of youth workers in London say young people they know are genuinely scared to make use of the abundant public transport or even ride their bike into a different area (and this fear is not confined to any one ethnic group).
@vfrmedia @annika That's really quite sad.
@gemlog @annika the worst part of it is govt, cops and older generations put so much effort into suppressing youth culture in London and UK when it led to noisy clubs/raves and a relatively harmless amount of soft drugs use, its taken a whole decade to realise that this just makes youths angrier and some go straight onto the harder drugs (also a lot of toxic culture is now imported here from the USA)

@annika No wait...Instead of all the traffic jams and endless parking shortages in cities put rails on the roads and have electric vehicles running on them in continuous circulation. We could call them "trolley-cars" or "street-cars".
