Recently I've been thinking a lot about startup culture, and its values. I don't want to be associated with it at all any more β€” I want to be the founder of an indie software business, not a startup. I care more about users than million-dollar valuations. And I want more people to feel the same way, choosing small-scale, human values over investment and growth. I tried to articulate this and wrote a thing about it: http://joshsharp.com.au/blog/fewer-startups-more-indies.html

@joshsharp well stated!
@djsundog hey thanks! I hoped I did an okay job getting the idea across but one can never know, you know. I rarely write stuff and by the end I always have no idea whether it's good or just rubbish πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
@joshsharp it's good, it's an important idea, and you did good
@joshsharp That’s awesome to hear – looking forward to reading your post :)
@joshsharp Just read your post; best of luck + great to have another indie dev join the family :)
@joshsharp Yes! It's my plan to start a 'sub-VC' business instead of a next startup job. Find a market too small for VC but big enough to support a small but sustainable business.
@JamesC yes, exactly! This is what Belle and I are trying to do with our thing, Exist. Best of luck!
@mattcropp definitely interested in co-ops as well, and learning more about how they work in the tech space

@js290 ha yeah that's a good thread.
@joshsharp That was a great blog. Following you now.
@joshsharp Hear hear. I have a hard time too with the growth-at-all-cost focus. In my view a business that is not growing can be a great business. If you’re happy and comfortable selling 50 apple pies a week, then by all means stick to that.
@steveroy right! And you can still grow, you're not *giving up* growth, just doing it on your own terms, sustainably
@joshsharp Yeah, I agree with you on that. I've always found the DHH/Basecamp model of a sustainable "lifestyle business" far more appealing than burning yourself out trying to hit a home run.
