There is little evidence to suggest that mastodons communicated by "tooting," and even less to suggest that they possessed the dexterity to play with a little paper airplane

@neiltyson why you gotta ruin everything? Sure they didn't fly paper airplanes and probably didn't toot. That's not the point. The point is fun.

You remember fun, don't you? Maybe as a boy you had it once?

@neiltyson and next I suppose you're gonna say the Earth's not flat 🙄
Woah if this is real, I’d be so happy. @neiltyson please be real!
@alexhaas @neiltyson is there such thing as “verified” for mastodon? Does it go against the point of mastodon?
@mcarroll @neiltyson To my knowledge, there isn’t. I don’t think it necessarily goes against the point of this network. cc: @Gargron

@neiltyson is this really ndt

because this toot is annoying enough to make me think so

@neiltyson Neil always around to find faults.. lol
@neiltyson it’s clear that is elephants communicate, in part, by tooting. There is good reason to think that mastodons are the same in this respect…#evolution
@neiltyson but! There’s also no evidence to the contrary.
@neiltyson
I was going to suggest “trumpeting” but it has three syllables. Non-starter.
@neiltyson Whether or not mastodons “toot” would depend heavily on what they ate, I guess?
@neiltyson this is the science I came for
@neiltyson looking forward to your toots!
@neiltyson… perhaps Mastodon ’toots’ broke the Pleistocene smell barrier, an echo down the centuries of Apatosaurus tails breaking the sound barrier…
@neiltyson So what you’re saying is… these things are technically possible?
@neiltyson good day Mr. Tyson, any chance you could start duel posting your social media to Mastadon. As a Twitter refugee I would love to see more of you here.
@neiltyson don't know about tooting but we know they were BIG.....tooting and tweeting...😆what next?
@neiltyson You say “little”….which implies there must be at least “some” evidence of mastadon toots…. >..>
@neiltyson Mastadon - where you can post one toot, and go viral five years later.
@stp @neiltyson great point! Imagine it as a stock that skyrocketed and he got in ahead
@neiltyson just read your bit in Starry Messenger with the “inanity defense.” This is similar to the “absurdity defense” argument I have against the Multiverse where everything possible exists. Where’s the universe where everyone is named Fred and has two noses? Three noses? Three million? What are the odds of being in a universe that makes as much sense as this one?
@neiltyson Welcome! Was felling sad when I deleted you from those I was following on the birdsite.
@neiltyson BUT, they also snort. I would say a ‘snort’ would be a good word to reclaim. I D.A.R.E you!
@neiltyson Little evidence, sure- but you are saying that it is not impossible. The evidence is out there somewhere.
@neiltyson You're probably a fake account, but god help me if you haven't managed to match NdGT's tone with this post.

@neiltyson

Actually, vocal ability had not yet evolved, but they could create an enormous array of toots, and some say the effective vocabulary may have been 800 different toots of varying lengths, scents, and pitches.

No paper airplane. But they did come up with a makeshift paper boat and an origami birds that flapped its wings.
