Step one for setting up my own Fediverse instance is now complete. Still need to setup a reverse proxy and TLS to actually use it for anything.

Things I learned:

- Was pretty easy (about 30 minutes so far)
- Works fine on a $5 VPS
- Pleroma defaults to 5,000 character toot limit (but >500 won't be relayed to default Mastodons)
- Although turned off by default, you can even access the instance's public timelines over the Gopher protocol (!) https://blog.soykaf.com/post/gopher-support-in-pleroma/

Gopher Support in Pleroma

Un-Bloating the Fediverse

@harding, is the fediverse another instance of mastodon which you control? I'm new here, so just trying to figure the Mastodon universe out.
@PaddyGoEzy Welcome! The Fediverse is a superset of Mastodon consiting of many networked instance using a few different (but similar) protocols and a few different softeare stacks. For the most part, every instance can communicate with every other, so it dorsn't matter which one you use (although different instances can have different rules).
