why do I get garbled output from DOS frotz V2.54, when I try to run Zork Zero?

Command entered:
C:\ZORK0> frotz -d 2 zork0.zip

The current directory contains this files:
ZORK0.CG1
ZORK0.EG1
ZORK0.MG1
ZORK0.ZIP
ZORKZERO.EXE

The last file is #Infocom's original interpreter.
