In Watanabe's Lazarus, episode 7, "Almost Blue", hits the viewer with a cliché but undeniable dilemma.
The Lazarus force is tasked to find Skinner, a genius doctor that invented a cure to pain and sadness, the Hapna drug.
After disappearing from public life for 3 years, the doctor resurfaces via video broadcast to tell the world that Hapna isn't actually side effect free, that its half life is 3 years, and that in about 30 days, every Hapna user (initially hinted as being almost 99% of humanity) will eventually succumb to it.
In "Almost Blue", the team is dispatched to 4 locations around the world, all locations where Skinner previously purchased property. Having since been consumed by the rising sea levels, the locations seem almost barren.
The scenes, however, are beautiful – an endless expanse of blue on blue. The iridescent blue sky hanging above the crystal blue water creates a purgatory-like liminal space, where remnants of urbanisation and humanity's presence are being consumed by Nature's unstoppable force.
This idyllic mood, detached from the daily life of Babylonia City allows the show to break through the characters' aloof shells to build up Skinner's argument: that humanity's hubris has drowned out the Biblical sound of six of the Seven Trumpets, and Skinner, against his will, has to sound the Seventh one, the cue for humanity to face the wrath of God.
At this point in the series, it feels like Watanabe, through Skinner, blames humans' hubris for the destruction of the world, rather than the mechanisms that put humanity on track for destruction.
It seems like the characters, silently, come to accept Skinner's (imo eco-fascist) conclusion that humanity must be purged for beauty to return.
