Majority of trans people avoid going to GP over transphobia fears

“Ninety-seven per cent of the trans UK public reported dealing with GPs that have little or no knowledge on trans issues, while nearly three quarters have reported avoiding their GP over fears of discrimination.
Of those who had faced issues with their GPs, 60 per cent had been refused non-transition related care because of their gender identity.”

The woman in question brought her script to her pharmacist to receive her free HRT, only to be transvestigated by the pharmacy. The pharmacist claimed they weren't sure if our member was AMAB or AFAB, and so he called the PCRS to find out if they would cover the cost of the script in this instance. He was told if the patient is trans, she has to pay. If she's cis, it's free. This is a level of scrutiny no person should be subjected to at their pharmacy, or by a healthcare provider? How can you guarantee if someone is cis or trans? There is no way to tell. This is just a small clip of the conversation between the pharmacist and our member. The IPU have stated that the free HRT scheme should include *all* women, not just a select number of women. The government just passed a motion in support of trans healthcare, yet days later, the PCRS is instructing pharmacists to transvestigate their patients. Is this the kind of Ireland we want to live in? The government continue to drag their feet on this topic, refusing to concretely define the parameters of the free HRT scheme. To refuse free HRT for trans women is to deny the fact that trans women are women. This is completely unacceptable. The law is very clear on this matter. If you have a gender recognition cert (GRC), you must be treated in all cases. You also cannot be compelled to provide your GRC. This is a clear breach of the law. This is further proof that we need to continue to pressure our government and policymakers. This grey area in terms of policy for trans healthcare leaves too much open for interpretation, resulting in situations like the above.
