(1/2) PRIDE MONTH 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm currently reading _Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson_ by Tourmaline.

I'm also gradually reading _The Gay Revolution_ by Lillian Faderman, another wonderful book.

My plastic surgeon for my bottom surgery in South Africa in the 1990s wasn't very nice. I stopped going to follow-ups rather than deal with him. Today I panicked and wondered if he had been involved in the apartheid government's secretive program of forced sex changes for white conscripts who were considered queer by the military authorities. Fortunately a little research showed my surgeon qualified after the end of the program.

"I left home at the age of ten because I was effeminate. I had nowhere else to go. The street was my home." — Sylvia Rivera, Stonewall veteran, STAR co-founder. The girl in today's story had a home, a school, and a law that found her anyway. Rivera had nothing and made a movement out of refusing to disappear. Witness is not a soft act. It is the decision to keep your eyes open when closing them would cost you less — what the sea's buoys did in the dark, what a trans kid did fighting a policy alone.

So this pride, light a candle for Tyra Hunter. Remember her name. She died an unjust death, and she deserves to be remembered. May she rest in peace #TransHistory #Pride
21 years later trans people in DC don't have to worry about being denied medical care, we have housing and work protections. Current council races have issues like providing housing credit to trans people because we are disproportionately unhoused. It's not perfect, but Tyra Hunter's death moved public opinion in favor of trans protection. #TransHistory #pride
