Sarge, the Phil Coulson look-alike who is all cold and hard and killy, further revealed himself not to be the threat of this season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ in ‘Toldja’. One might question why he couldn’t help the team with their Shrike problem earlier, but he does help rescue May and Yo-Yo who were trapped on the Quinjet with some rapidly expanding Shrike. In doing so though he calls into question the leadership of Mack and in some ways the timing of this season. I’ll be honest and say that I’ve never really cared much for Mack’s character. He has at times come across as selfish and sulky. Very human traits to be sure, but not really the kinds of things you want to see in a leader. In order to better buy Mack as the leader of SHIELD, it would have been nice to see him have a season to grow into the role before having to be compared to the old boss on a regular basis. It’s almost as if the producers have decided I am not supposed to like this character by never really giving him a chance. Apologies to all the Mack fans out there, but it feels like your character is being robbed of a chance to really shine. The other big deal in this episode is that FitzSimmons, after a few missteps, are finally on their way home. Anthony Michael Hall, in a kind of oddly placed underused cameo, shows up as Kitson himself and attempts to decapitate our heroes. Fortunately, a mysterious figure shows up to buy their lives, though one might point out that they didn’t really seem too concerned that they’d end up with their heads in a basket. Maybe that’s because they were somewhat resigned to their fates, but that doesn’t really add up with their resolution last week. The worst part of this storyline is the departure of Enoch. Sure, it seems likely that we’ll see him again at some point, but I would have liked to have seen him a member of SHIELD. I’d certainly take him over Deke.
