I view this reasoning as possibly close to: The more diverse languages an IAL uses, the harder it is for anyone to easily understand (theoretically and as an admitted generalisation with all the normal caveats for generalisations).
Which hints at a trade-off, and each IAL has to decide how to balance language diversity against immediate intelligibility for a certain set of speakers. And some IALs do go for the more diverse side of the balance:
There are attempts at involving more languages, for example Lingwa de planeta (LdP) "is based on the most widely spoken languages of the world" but of its ten representative/main-source languages, a significant number are still Indo-European; the ten are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, which between them represent a significant portion of the world's population's native languages.
