Made some good progress this week on the design of the wood shed. Originally I was thinking about a cedar shingle roof, but those are super expensive even for such a small area. I have a whole bunch of pine & cedar tongue & groove left over from renovating the schoolhouse, so when I found this style of vertical board roof called “yamatobuki” I thought it would be perfect. #woodworking #timberframing

Haven't posted for a good while so this is a sneak preview of my next project. It's a 1950s mass concrete council cottage renovation in North Clare. Hoping to use as many wood products as possible but have to retain the original walls. Adding an extension and a joining room but haven't got planning yet. It took three incredibly sweaty afternoons, but thinks to a friend kindly lending me the use of their workshop, I’ve now got all the timber for my next project planed and ready for joinery. #woodworking #TimberFraming

I just freaked out a little that the tying joint I designed didn’t have any mechanical component to resist the beam pulling out of the post over time 😬

After a whole bunch of research of different joints, figuring out if I could move the beam without damaging the aesthetics… I ended up keeping the same design and adding a single peg. What a roller coaster of emotion.

Came up with this design for a timber-frame style berry trellis. Posts are black locust, with hemlock rails, from my local saw mill. Cross rails are inserted through the mortise and secured with a pair of wedges (similar to a nuki joint in Japanese carpentry). #woodworking #TimberFraming
