Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Societal Melancholia in the Wake of Imperialism

Wind-Up Bird, like several of Murakami's later works, deals with social issues -- particularly atrocities that have been suppressed in mainstream historical accounts.

“Reading a #Murakami #novel … (is) a disquieting experience, like wandering through a forest with no end in sight, and #TheWind-UpBirdChronicle is the deepest and densest of all those forests.” fivebooks.com/people/haruk...

Haruki Murakami

Japanese author Haruki Murakami (born 1949) has written both novels and short stories. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is probably his most famous work, recommended on Five Books as his ‘grand opus.’ Short stories by Haruki Murakami appear in The Elephant Vanishes, a good book to read first to get a taste of his writing. Murakami’s most recent novel is The City and Its Uncertain Walls (2023), published in 2024 in English.

Five Books

Great. I've gone back to being a tired person who can't go to sleep.. sitting and reading

#Reading
For very strange reasons, two of my three children stopped reading when about 13. But both have recently started again. We were talking about books over the weekend. Everyone is reading very different style books.

Want to crack on with #TheWindUpBirdChronicle after a bit of a lull. There's a hint of Persona/ Shadow/ Ego in it that I want to find out more about.

Although I also blame #harukimurakami #TheWindUpBirdChronicle where I considered the possibility of death by being left in an old well

#spoilers maybe maybe not
