Final form for v1! #thegreatmediaproject #minirack

Not been thrilled with Linux Mint. Performance seems snappy (no snaps :) ) but the Cinnamon DE is meh with X11. I may see if I can update the NVIDIA drivers up to 550 or higher. Seems the base repo only loads up 535. Wayland seems broke on 535 as well.

At this rate I am an Arch user soon…

I also built out my RackMate 01 and it’s cute. I added the 12 port patch panel and fan. May run some leds. Not sure it will hold the NAS (5 Bay Synology) but should hold the DAS. That should be very helpful.

I was reading something yesterday on the Plex subreddit and it was cost/value/ROI between several streaming services and #selfhosting and it’s much bigger than streaming services. It’s being self reliant and the satisfaction is very high. Just opening the door can change your priorities #thegreatmediaproject

Other than waking up at 530 with the thought it was Monday, I am feeling better than yesterday. After my motor skills post I decided to take a Covid test, negative thankfully.

I am gonna chalk it up to exhaustion and glad I got some rest.

I did make the final transcoding and transferred the last of all the Law and Order series and spin offs moved to the NAS. Biggest set of discs I have really done well. Music I am pretty good video as been a learning curve, both learning the video stuff and the infra to support it…

That was the goal of #thegreatmediaproject when I started, but it’s become more it’s grown into being better at my personal privacy, using what I own, repairing over buying, sweat equity, and satisfaction.

I realized over the weekend that I had to moved the 25 seasons of Law and Order SUV to the NAS and I never did transcode it which was why I moved it in the first place 🤣. I woke up early and got that moving.

It’s going to take days to actually do it all but the whole purpose of this was to get Law and Order on the NAS #thegreatmediaproject

In other media project news. MP3 to FLAC is a big ole change in size. 20k songs or so per TB for FLAC vs 100k songs of MP3. That’s what happens when you take long breaks in ripping and organizing music. Someday @bradwilson will acknowledge my efforts and allow me to grace the hallowed halls of music hoarder greatness

Totally forgot the fleeting feeling! Gave my GF a link to one of the services and she was able to login. Seems silly but to have her do that is big for me because she thinks it’s a service I signed up for in the cloud 🙃#thegreatmediaproject #newrig #Linux

Just over 2 years since I dug into #thegreatmediaproject and I feel like the most significant thing just happened and it was fleeting.

If you kept up this all started to get my girlfriend access to all her dvds of all the Law and Order she owns. That spilled over into my DVD and CD ripping project that had been on hold since 2016.

From 1 random raspberry pi to a 30TB NAS, 1 RPi 4, 1 i3 NUC, 1 x1 Carbon with RTX GPU, and new personal workstation (see my #newrig tag). Upgraded my networking from Eero pros with WiFi 5 to Eero pro 6e and 2.5gb for the personal devices and hardwired all servers listed above.

Learned #Linux DE’s Pop_OS, Ubuntu, Cinnamon. All deb backend machines. Running 2 instances of Docker, DNS sink, 20 services. Added a VPS running more services. I have become dangerous enough to move to Linux for my personal machines completely.

That leaves my work machine and phone on apple stuff.

So much I want to work on in 2025 project wise. I will continue on #thegreatmediaproject and need to write a “year in review” and lay out 2025.

I also want to get my 3d printer back up and running. So many ideas this year could have been solved had I kept my printer running.

Last I want to finish wiring my house to be fully wired with Ethernet on each floor using CAT6 and MoCA

I feel like there has been a lot of start/stop on my work with my dns for my homelab but I got caddy working with my local docker stuff and now my subdomains are working for my VPS locally.

Now that I have the basics working I can map the rest of the ports/subdomains and bind my https port.

Once this is done I need to document and move on to some more workflow and automation.

Doing a weird brunch for Xmas with the Girlfriend’s family. Noon Xmas eve day which is a regular day for a lot of folks seems off.

I also haven’t gotten anything for anyone because I ain’t wasting money on useless shit. I am giving the gift of media sharing by opening up my media library to my family. It’s what I have been working hard on with #thegreatmediaproject
