Tra le mura di un appartamento tra Caserta e San Nicola la Strada, la Polizia Provinciale, insieme agli esperti della Lipu di Napoli, ha scoperto diciannove uccelli tra cardellini, canarini e altre specie protette, tenuti in condizioni igienico-sanitarie pessime. Alcuni di loro erano stati vittime di una pratica atroce: gli animali ritenuti incapaci di cantare venivano accecati con un ago infuocato, nel tentativo di “migliorarne” la voce, secondo credenze diffuse in ambienti criminali.
Quando gli agenti hanno bussato alla porta, il 38enne residente ha cercato di liberarsi di uno degli uccelli, lanciandolo dal balcone. Fortunatamente, l’animale è stato recuperato da un poliziotto posizionato all’esterno. Tutti i cardellini e gli altri volatili sequestrati sono stati affidati al Cras di Napoli (Centro di Recupero Animali Selvatici) per ricevere le cure necessarie e tornare un giorno liberi in natura.
Secondo le indagini, l’uomo, già noto alle forze dell’ordine, catturava gli uccelli e li vendeva illegalmente a prezzi elevati: sul mercato nero un cardellino può arrivare a costare da 100 fino a 8.000 euro. Il comandante della Polizia Provinciale, Biagio Chiariello, ha sottolineato come la specie sia protetta dalle direttive europee e quanto il traffico illecito rappresenti un pericolo costante per la fauna selvatica.

Within the walls of an apartment between Caserta and San Nicola la Strada, the Provincial Police, together with experts from Lipu of Naples, discovered nineteen birds, including bullfinches, canaries, and other protected species, kept in extremely poor hygienic and sanitary conditions. Some of them had been victims of a cruel practice: animals deemed unable to sing were blinded with a flaming needle, in an attempt to “improve” their voices, according to beliefs widespread in criminal circles.

When the officers knocked on the door, the 38-year-old resident tried to get rid of one of the birds, throwing it from the balcony. Fortunately, the animal was recovered by a police officer stationed outside. All the bullfinches and other birds seized were entrusted to the Cras of Naples (Center for the Recovery of Wild Animals) to receive the necessary care and return one day free in nature.

According to the investigation, the man, already known to law enforcement, captured the birds and sold them illegally for high prices: on the black market a bullfinch can cost from 100 to 8,000 euros. The commander of the Provincial Police, Biagio Chiariello, emphasized how the species is protected by European directives and how illicit trafficking represents a constant danger to wildlife.
